Hi! I am sorry for not updating at the speed and efficiency that I normally do. This week I have switched jobs, prepared for the upcoming holiday, and a family member moving back into the household. Needless to say, shit has been crazy. This chapter hopefully will be up to the normal standard that all the others have been. If not I truly apologize, and hopefully, chapters will be more frequent for everyone when things settle down. Until then please enjoy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A few Hours Before the Hunt
Lyra
There are fourteen residential colleges that students are randomly assigned to. In total, 6,250 students are in this school and roughly 20 percent of them live off campus. Twenty percent of 6,250 is 1,250. With this in mind with how many people I saw following me, there's nothing I could bring up to one of the people that run this place that wouldn't tell me that I'm out of my mind, or that I'm overwhelmed with the move from one place to another.
When it comes to Yale, I am alone. That said It doesn't mean I can't lie to others... like cops. I could make up a sob story. When my dearest parents died I found support in a teenage romance, only for it to become obsessive and controlling. The people who are following me are the friends and family of the guy who mysteriously disappeared when I threatened to bring the cops into the mess. Bring tears into the play too.
It's foolproof. Out of all my plans and thinking, this is the only one that I found that had the least amount of things that could go wrong.
Get in trouble with cops? Unlikely. Get written up after Yale finds out I pulled a stunt that got cops into the matter? Ouch, but worth it. Either way, I have a way to make sure these freaks don't get their slimy paws on me.
I glance over to my roommate and sigh. I'm kinda disappointed she fell asleep when she seemed to understand that something serious was happening to me. We only talked a little bit and she seemed nice but from the look in her eye, it seemed she understood that I wasn't safe as of right now. I get up from my desk walk over to my bed and sit there. My phone is charging on the nightstand next to the bed and there's a wooden-themed rustic clock lazily sitting next to my phone.
2:47
I snatch my phone off of the stand and put my plan into play. I think of my parents, the day everything went down, and tears well up in my eyes on cue.
"911 what's your emergency?"
"I'm so sorry to bother you this late into the night but I'm so scared right now."
"It is ok ma'am what's wrong?"
"I have this ex that I hadn't seen in years after I threatened to call the cops on him and now his family and friends are stalking me now that I'm in college."
"Ok and what's your name?"
"Lyra Throne, I am 19, my parents died when I was 16 and then I met my now ex. It got really scary when I was with him so I dumped him when I turned 18. He was the kinda guy who tried and hurt me so I threatened with cops and he just disappeared."
"Have you seen him?"
"No. Just his friends and family. He has a ton of friends after being in summer school."
"Are they with you right now?"
"They've surrounded me in my dorm."
"Help is on the way."
I practically sob into the phone and pushed out a thank you before telling her the address of the dorm, and what I looked like as of right now. I decide to put survival tutorials in the background as I prepare for the war I will be faced with. I grab my shoes take out the padding they had and cut a little hole into the bottoms. I jammed a knife into where the carving was and put the padding back where it was. Next was my backpack.
Two water bottles, six mountain valleys, a book, a small bag of waxing beads, a lighter, two weapons, a flashlight, batteries, pads, tampons, meds, a surgical box, and two pairs of socks before my bag was as stuffed as my brain from multitasking. From what to do if you're kidnapped, to if you're lost in the woods.
I glance out the window to see the red and blue lights that had traumatized me three years ago and I rubbed my eyes hard to give off the act of crying much more than I had been and opened the door. Two officers were standing there and one had their hand up ready to knock.
"Hi."
"Hello, are you Lyra?"
"Yes."
"Well we did a sweep before coming to talk to you and we didn't find anybody. Do you mind if you come with us to answer some questions?"
"Sure."
One of the officers motions for me to walk ahead of them and I step forward. We begin to walk down the hall when I glance around to see if there is anyone around. Nothing.
We get around ten feet from the car when I feel a jab of a needle in my neck. I whip around to see the officers smiling at me.
"W-what?" I turn and stumble towards the car to see the original cops bloodied and likely dead in the backseat of the car. I feel myself losing consciousness but I fight it. I have more in me, I know it! I continue walking towards the car while holding the side of my neck I can see it is unlocked and the keys are still in the ignition. Passenger is closest and it'll have to do.
Hopefully, this works.
"She is strong." I look back to see them lazily walking behind me. Amused, curious, and fucking stupid as I yank open the door and throw myself inside. Locking the car behind me I struggle to climb into the driver's side of the car but once I do I put it in the drive. Just as I do I see a crowd of people sprinting towards me and one of the fake cops breaks the driver's window and stabs another needle in me. I scream, yank out the needle, and peel off.
I'm so stupid. I am losing my grind on driving and staying conscious. The last thing I see is the ditch I crashed into.
