The air was thick with an almost palpable dread as Clara stood frozen in front of the mirror, staring at the shadowy figure of Thomas. His image, distorted and hazy like a reflection in a fogged-up window, lingered there, half-seen, half-hidden. His face, once a source of comfort in her memories, now twisted into something unrecognizable.
*Is he dead?* Clara thought, her mind screaming with panic. But she couldn't bring herself to look away. Even though every instinct told her to run, to escape from the grasp of whatever supernatural force was pulling her deeper into this nightmare, her legs were rooted to the spot.
The figure of Thomas in the mirror didn't move — he stood there, watching her, as though waiting for her to make the next move. His clothes were outdated, mismatched, like something out of another time, and his eyes — those cold, soulless eyes — pierced into Clara's very core.
"Why are you here?" Clara whispered, her voice trembling. The room around her seemed to spin, her breath quickening as the house groaned with an unsettling heaviness. The floorboards creaked in a low, mocking rhythm, echoing her growing sense of dread. *This isn't real. It can't be real.* But then, she remembered the voice from earlier — the same voice that had whispered to her that Emily "belonged to them."
"I never wanted this," the figure of Thomas in the mirror whispered, his voice low, raspy, and oddly familiar. "None of us did, Clara. But once it's begun, there's no stopping it. *You can't stop it.*"
Clara's breath hitched. She'd heard those words before — the same dark, foreboding tone that had filled the air moments ago. She wasn't sure if the voice had come from Thomas or the house itself, but the implications were too great to ignore.
"*What have you done, Thomas?*" Clara shouted, her voice shaking with a mix of anger and fear. "What did you bring into this house? What did you — "
"I didn't bring anything," Thomas's figure replied, his voice carrying an eerie sense of calm, as though he were a mere observer in his own fate. "The house has always been here. It chose us. We were *meant* to be its caretakers."
Clara's stomach twisted. "Caretakers?" she echoed. "You didn't... You didn't tell Vivienne. You didn't tell *me*. Why?"
Thomas's face remained impassive, his mouth barely moving as he spoke. "You don't understand, Clara. This isn't something that can be told. It's something that must be *witnessed*. You see, the house doesn't need to be fed with blood or sacrifice. It feeds off time, off memories. It twists them, stretches them... distorts them."
Clara's heart skipped a beat. "*What* do you mean?"
A shadow passed over Thomas's face, his eyes narrowing as he seemed to lose focus for a brief moment, as if something was pulling him away. The image of him flickered like a weak signal on an old television screen, distorting and warping. But when it cleared again, his voice was louder, more urgent.
"Emily was always meant to be a part of it. From the moment she saw the mirror, she *belonged* to it. The house can't let go once it's chosen." His voice grew softer, almost pleading. "But you... you're different. You're the key. You're the one who can finally *end* it."
Clara's head spun as his words sank in. Was he trying to manipulate her? Or was he speaking the truth? She didn't know anymore. All she knew was that the more she heard, the less she understood, and the more dangerous everything seemed.
The mirror flickered again, and this time, a vision of Emily appeared in the glass — her face pale, her eyes wide with terror. Clara could see that the girl was not just a ghost, but a reflection — trapped, her movements jerky and unnatural. The image was fading, slipping away like smoke in the wind, but before it disappeared completely, Emily's lips parted.
*"Please, Clara... Help me..."*
The plea tore through Clara's heart. It was Emily's voice, soft and broken, pleading for her to save her from whatever force held her trapped in the mirror. The ghostly figure of Thomas seemed to retreat as the image of Emily filled the space, her eyes locked on Clara's.
Clara took a step closer, her mind racing. "Emily... Emily, I'm here. I'll get you out."
But as Clara reached out, her fingers grazing the cold surface of the mirror, something strange happened. The temperature in the room plummeted, and the house groaned louder, as if waking from a long, restless slumber. The flickering light from the mirror cast strange shadows across the walls, and Clara's reflection — her own image — seemed to shift and distort.
It was as though the house was reacting to her presence, like it had sensed her resolve, her willingness to confront whatever lay ahead. The walls seemed to pulse, and the very air vibrated with an unseen energy. The mirror wasn't just a window — it was a *gateway*, and the house itself was alive.
Suddenly, Clara felt a sharp pressure on her chest — a weight so heavy it nearly knocked the wind out of her. She gasped for air, clutching her chest as the sensation intensified, squeezing tighter with every passing second. Something was trying to pull her in, to claim her the way it had claimed Emily.
"Clara, *no*!" Vivienne's voice cut through the darkness like a scream, breaking Clara's focus. She whipped around to see Vivienne standing in the doorway, eyes wide with terror. "*Get away from the mirror!*"
But it was too late.
Clara felt herself being pulled toward the glass, her body moving against her will as if some unseen force had taken hold of her. She reached out desperately, trying to resist, but the pressure around her chest grew unbearable. The room spun, and she could hear the low hum of the house, the sound of something ancient and terrible stirring deep within its foundations.
In the mirror, Emily's eyes were locked onto Clara's once more, her mouth moving in a silent plea for help. But Clara couldn't move. She couldn't break free.
"Help me..." Emily whispered again. But this time, Clara wasn't sure if it was Emily's voice or something else. Something darker. *Something worse.*
And as Clara's body was drawn closer to the mirror, her thoughts began to fade, consumed by the dark pull of the house, her own mind slipping away like sand in the wind.
And then, all at once, everything went black.
