"Damn it!"
"Argh!"
The desperate cries of the last bandits echoed outside the cave.
Lira's skeleton army had already engaged them, clashing swords with the bandits who had been lying in wait.
The once-confident grins of the ambushers had turned to sheer terror as skeletal warriors advanced relentlessly.
Blades clashed with bone, sparks flying in the chaotic skirmish.
One bandit swung wildly at a skeleton, shattering its ribs, only for the skeletal warrior to remain standing, unfazed, and drive its sword into the man's side.
I stood near the cave's entrance, rifle in hand, watching the mayhem.
Nathalie clung to my side, her small hand gripping my sleeve tightly.
"Remind me to stay on your good side," I muttered, glancing at Lira, who stood beside me, completely calm.
She gave me a small smirk, her red eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. "Consider this a demonstration. They thought they could ambush us—fools."
"Even though it's nighttime, I can see these fools' faces twisted in terror," Lira remarked, her voice calm yet laced with amusement.
"I must admit, it's satisfying. But... I had hoped it would be bright when I finally stepped out of that cave. It's been so long since I've felt the sun. At least this way, I won't be blinded by."
I glanced at her, raising an eyebrow. "You're really thinking about the weather right now?"
She chuckled softly, crossing her arms. "Why not? This is hardly a challenge. Besides, it's refreshing to see the outside world again, even if it's under the moonlight."
A loud cry cut through the air as another bandit fell, their weapon clattering to the ground.
The skeletons moved methodically, surrounding the remaining fighters. There weren't many left now.
"So," I said, watching the chaos unfold. "Do you plan to leave anyone alive?"
Lira tilted her head, pretending to consider.
"Alive? Hmm... that depends. Are they worth sparing?" Lira asked, her voice calm yet laced with a chilling indifference.
I tightened my grip on the rifle, keeping my gaze on the chaotic scene ahead.
"Just... make sure none of them come near us, alright? I can't afford any ambushes or surprises. Too much risk, and it's not worth it."
Lira smirked faintly, tilting her head.
"You talk about risk, yet here you are, dragging the little one into danger." She glanced down at Nathalie, her expression unreadable.
"I didn't drag her," I replied sharply. "I'm protecting her. There's a difference."
Lira studied me for a moment, then sighed and waved her hand lazily.
The skeletons surged forward, their movements more aggressive and precise.
The remaining bandits didn't stand a chance. Terrified screams echoed through the night as one by one, the bandits fell, their weapons clattering uselessly to the ground.
"There. Happy?" Lira said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "The faster this is over, the faster we can leave."
Before all of this happen, I am already closing Nathalie's eyes gently and covering her ears.
She didn't need to see or hear the horror unfolding before us. This was too much for a child, no matter how strong she seemed.
"Aaaaahh!!!"
