🦦BECKY🦦—Alright, gentlemen, we need to go check out that soccer field to explain how we're going to proceed with building the new shopping center —I announced, adjusting the papers in my hands.
—Yes, Miss Armstrong —one of the workers replied.
We left my office and headed to the field, located in one of the city's neighborhoods. When we arrived, we began setting up equipment in the upper bleachers.
—Boss, they're playing —one of the workers said, pointing toward the field.
I looked down and saw a group of girls, about thirteen years old, running across the field in the middle of a game. A tall boy with dark hair was acting as the referee. Then, I heard a familiar voice on the other side of the bleachers.
—You've got this, Nina! —someone cheered enthusiastically.
I turned and saw Freen among a group of people, shouting and smiling, completely engrossed in the game. I couldn't help but smile, seeing her so happy. She looked like a different person from the Freen who always confronted me with a hostile attitude.
Curiously, she only acted that way toward me.
I smiled as I watched the game for another moment. A girl in a blue uniform seemed very encouraged by Freen's support; she was probably someone close to her.
—We'll have to wait until they're done before we start —I told the workers as the girls continued playing.
A few minutes later, the game ended, and the team of the girl Freen was cheering for won. Freen was celebrating excitedly, but I decided to focus on my work.
—Take photos from this angle; the main entrance will be here —I instructed the workers, giving directions as the field started to clear out.
Suddenly, a familiar but much less pleasant voice interrupted me.
—Who said we want a shopping center here? —Freen shouted, clearly upset.
I smiled without turning around, focused on reviewing the photos. I knew she was addressing me.
—I'm talking to you! Idiots, stop ignoring me! —she shouted again, with so much energy it almost made me laugh.
I turned around slowly, walked down a few steps, and stood in front of her.
—Why are you so loud? You're going to burst my eardrums —I said with a calm smile. Freen looked at me, surprised to see me.
—You again? Don't you have anything better to do than come and bother this neighborhood? Nobody wants a shopping center here —she replied, glaring at me.
—I'm just doing my job, Miss Rude. This field will be demolished, and I'm going to build a beautiful shopping center. You should feel honored to attend the grand opening —I said, enjoying the irritation on her face.
—You, your team, and your bosses are a bunch of idiots —she spat, her voice full of anger.
I looked at her calmly and stepped a little closer.
—Watch what you say. And if you're mad about those photos I saw on your phone... forget it. They weren't even interesting enough to remember —I said, trying to provoke her a bit.
—You're a... —she began, but someone quickly approached.
—Freen, is everything okay? —a boy asked, looking in my direction with suspicion—. Is she bothering you?
—Don't worry, Heng. I don't know who this woman is; I think she mistook me for someone else —she said, looking at me with disdain and feigning innocence.
