The halls of Varda Academy seemed colder the next day, as though the very air carried a weight of expectation. Sonia walked briskly toward the library, her mind still reeling from her sparring session with Phionex the day before. Something about the new girl didn't sit right with her—the way she moved, the way she spoke, even the way she fought. Every interaction with Phionex felt calculated, as though Sonia were a piece on a chessboard she hadn't realized she was playing on.

When Sonia entered the library, she found Jermaih already seated at their usual table. His arms were crossed, his brow furrowed in concentration as he flipped through an ancient tome.

"Morning," Sonia said quietly, sliding into the seat across from him.

Jermaih looked up, his expression softening slightly. "Hey. How are you holding up?"

Sonia hesitated. "I don't know. Phionex... she's different. She's strong. And she—" Sonia paused, the memory of Phionex's cryptic words echoing in her mind. "She knows something about me. About what happened with Neptune. She's not just some new student, Jermaih. I can feel it."

Jermaih leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. "I've been thinking the same thing. There's something off about her. And I don't think it's a coincidence that she showed up right after the fight with Neptune."

"You think they're working together?" Sonia asked, her voice dropping to a whisper.

Jermaih's expression darkened. "It's possible. Neptune hasn't made a move since the fight, but we know she's not the type to back down. If she's planning something, Phionex could be part of it."

Sonia frowned, her thoughts swirling. "If that's true, we need to figure out what they're after."

Jermaih nodded. "I've been looking into old records, trying to find any connection between Aeternal Flame Academy and Neptune's family. If Phionex is tied to her, there might be a trail."

Sonia glanced at the stack of books on the table, their titles worn with age. "And?"

Jermaih sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Nothing concrete yet, but there's a pattern. Neptune's family has ties to the Nexus Council, and there's mention of an artifact they've been searching for—something called the Core of Concordia."

"The Core of Concordia?" Sonia repeated.

"It's a relic," Jermaih explained. "One that supposedly has the power to amplify an Elemental's abilities to an unimaginable degree. If Neptune's after it, and Phionex is helping her, they could be planning something big."

Sonia's stomach twisted. "What do we do?"

Jermaih's eyes met hers, his expression firm. "We need to watch them. Gather evidence. If we can prove they're plotting something, we can stop them before it's too late."

Later that evening, Sonia found herself wandering through the academy gardens, her thoughts restless. The moonlight cast an eerie glow over the towering hedges and still fountains, the shadows stretching long and dark.

She wasn't alone.

Phionex stepped out from behind a stone column, her amber eyes gleaming in the dim light.

"Couldn't sleep either?" she asked, her tone light, almost friendly.

Sonia tensed but forced herself to stay calm. "Something like that. What are you doing out here?"

Phionex shrugged, leaning casually against the column. "I like the quiet. It gives me time to think."

Sonia studied her, trying to decipher the layers behind her words. "About what?"

Phionex's smile was small, almost wistful. "About power. About how it changes people. You've felt it, haven't you? That surge of energy, that moment when you realize you're capable of so much more than you ever imagined?"

Sonia's pulse quickened. "What are you getting at?"

Phionex stepped closer, her movements slow and deliberate. "I see it in you, Sonia. The potential. The strength. But you're holding yourself back. Why?"

"Because I don't want to hurt anyone," Sonia said firmly, her voice steady despite the tension in her chest.

Phionex tilted her head, her smile fading. "Sometimes, the only way to protect what matters is to let go. To embrace the power and use it to shape the world the way it needs to be."

Sonia frowned, taking a step back. "That's not who I am."

Phionex's gaze hardened, the embers in her eyes flaring briefly. "Maybe not yet. But it will be. When the time comes, you'll see the truth."

Before Sonia could respond, Phionex turned and disappeared into the shadows, leaving only the faint scent of smoke behind.

Unbeknownst to Sonia, Phionex wasn't heading back to the dormitories. Instead, she slipped into a hidden passage beneath the academy, where Neptune was waiting.

"Well?" Neptune asked, her voice sharp.

Phionex smirked. "She's stubborn, but she'll come around. The power inside her is too strong to ignore. We just need to push her a little further."

Neptune crossed her arms, her expression cold. "And if she doesn't?"

Phionex's smile turned wicked, flames flickering at her fingertips. "Then we'll take what we need by force. The Core of Concordia is within our reach, and Sonia's power is the key. Once we have it, the Nexus will be ours."

Neptune's lips curled into a dark smile. "Good. Let her think she has a choice. It'll make it that much sweeter when she realizes she doesn't."

As the two conspired in the shadows, the academy above remained blissfully unaware of the storm gathering beneath their feet. But Sonia could feel it—something shifting in the air, a heat building on the horizon.

And when it came, she would have to choose which side of the flames she stood on.
