Niang started to regret going to verify Gu Lin's identity.
She got an X-ray, bought a bunch of meds, and even brought Gu Lin back home.
It wasn't her idea; Gu Lin insisted on sending her home. She saw her parents out for a walk and urged him to leave quickly, but he kept joking around without realizing it, so they ended up bumping into her parents and had no choice but to go upstairs for tea.
But it wasn't all for nothing; at least Niang found out that Gu Lin does have a BMW.
Oh, and she also realized that he seems interested in her.
Otherwise, what else could he mean by talking about "patients" and "dating" at the hospital? If there's nothing else to it, then he must be interested in her.
Women's intuition is usually spot on, but Niang used to be straightforward in relationships. She would confirm things right away if she felt a connection. But with Gu Lin, things were more subtle; they were polite and friendly like making friends, yet clearly moving fast towards marriage if things went well.
They haven't developed much of a relationship yet, but they've already thoroughly explored each other's family background and financial situation.
Blind dates are such a strange thing.
For example, her longest-term boyfriend didn't even know her full name was Erhe, but Gu Lin was already calling her "Erhuo" and asking if it was her nickname.
Who names their kid "Erhuo"?!
Niang glared at him, and Gu Lin self-consciously answered his own question, "My little brother's nickname is also 'Erhuo'."
What does "also" mean?
"My mom didn't say 'Erhuo'; she said 'Erhe', which is Manchu," explained Niang patiently while her parents were still present, "I'm Manchu."
"Oh, I see," Gu Lin repeated, "That's a mouthful."
Nima had already opened the door, seemingly happy that the two kids were chatting happily, and joined in with a smile, "She was older when she was pregnant with her, so we named her this for safety and peace."
Gu Lin seemed enlightened, praised the name several times, and complimented Nima for her thoughtful naming of Niang, "My name was chosen quite hastily; my mom said I was conceived unexpectedly, so she just named me Gu Lin on the spot."
Niang almost believed him until he mentioned he argued with his mom. Then Gu Ba explained that the character "Lin" means overlooking from above, signifying their hope for their son to become top quality talent. After hearing this, Gu Lin reflected on "the heart of parents everywhere".
Niang discovered that Gu Lin was quite eloquent, and seeing Nima almost moved to tears made her reflect on who this middle-aged woman, usually furious and ready to tear the roof off, was now—a loving and easily moved matriarch.
As they were talking, Xiwen came out of the study, curiously sized up Gu Lin, and politely called him "Uncle".
This "uncle" left Gu Lin momentarily stunned but made Niang feel somewhat pleased inside. She remembered how Gu Lin had his dog call her "Auntie Wang"!
Gu Lin must have realized that Xiwen was Niang's brother's child left at their house. He formally shook hands with Niang and returned the greeting, startling Xiwen.
Niang went to the kitchen to make tea and returned to find Gu Lin already chatting happily with her parents and niece.
This puzzled Niang because Gu Lin seemed less talkative with her, often pausing before answering, which made him seem very composed.
