The evening was unusually still, with the city's hum muted by the thick curtains drawn across the living room windows. The Sharmas had spent the day in silence, each of them wrapped up in their own thoughts after the tumultuous events of the past few months. The weight of the legal battle had left them drained, yet a sense of uncertainty hung in the air—like a storm waiting to break. The courtroom may have ruled in their favor, but they knew that the war was far from over.
Ritika sat in the dimly lit living room, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the rim of her tea cup. Rohit was in the kitchen, putting away the last of the dishes from dinner, when his phone buzzed on the countertop.
"Not again," Ritika muttered under her breath. It seemed that the chaos was never far behind.
Rohit glanced at the phone, his expression hardening as he saw the name flashing across the screen: Rajiv.
"I'll take this," Rohit said, stepping away from the kitchen to answer the call.
Ritika watched him closely, her breath catching in her throat as she sensed something was amiss. When he returned, his face was ashen, his eyes clouded with something between disbelief and resignation.
"Rohit?" Ritika asked, her voice trembling.
"We need to talk," Rohit said, sitting down beside her. He took her hand gently, squeezing it. "It's about Vamika."
Ritika blinked in confusion. "Vamika? What about her? Why are we—"
"Vamika's medical records," Rohit interrupted, his voice thick with emotion. "We've just gotten some new information. Rajiv is saying there's something... something we didn't know."
The words hung in the air like a heavy fog. Ritika felt the blood drain from her face.
"What do you mean something we didn't know?" she asked, her throat constricting.
"Vamika's condition..." Rohit paused, his eyes darting around as if searching for the right words. "It wasn't just an accident, Ritika. It wasn't just something that happened out of nowhere."
The truth seemed to settle over them like a cold shroud, and Ritika felt a knot form in her stomach. "What do you mean?" she repeated, her voice small, barely above a whisper.
"I'm not sure how to say this, but..." Rohit took a deep breath. "Vamika had a pre-existing medical condition. Something that her parents, Virat and Anushka, didn't disclose."
Ritika's heart thudded in her chest. "They... they didn't say anything?"
"No," Rohit replied, his jaw tightening. "And now, it looks like they've been hiding it. Vamika's hospitalization... it was related to something much deeper, something that had nothing to do with Samaira."
The conversation with Rajiv had been harrowing. The details were sketchy, but the implications were clear. The truth about Vamika's condition had remained hidden, buried under layers of secrecy.
Rajiv had managed to get a hold of Vamika's medical records through a series of legal channels. There, in black and white, was evidence that pointed to a congenital heart defect that had been undiagnosed for most of her life. The Kohli family had never shared this information with anyone—not even the doctors treating her at the time of her hospitalization.
