Weeks had passed since that night in the park. The police had come and gone, his parents had tightened their grip around him, and the whispers at school had faded into silence. Lila was gone—vanished without a trace as if she had never existed at all. For a while, Alec waited, expecting another note, another shadow lingering in the corner of his eye, but nothing came. He was free. But freedom, he realized, wasn't the same as peace.
He went through the motions of everyday life, trying to rebuild the fragments of his shattered world. His parents watched him closely, their worry hovering like a cloud that never lifted, but they didn't press him for details. School was a blur, his friends awkward and careful around him, as if one wrong word might shatter him all over again.
The nightmares never really stopped. Some nights, he still woke in a cold sweat, Lila's eyes staring into his own, her voice calling his name from the darkness. He would lie awake until dawn, staring at the ceiling, wondering where she had gone, what had happened to the girl he once knew.
But there was a strange comfort in the ordinary things—taking a walk, listening to the rain, losing himself in the noise of the city. It was in those quiet moments that he felt normal again, if only for a fleeting second.
One crisp autumn afternoon, he returned to the park. It had been nagging at him—the need to go back to the place where everything had come to an end. The trees were bare now, their branches clawing at the grey sky, and the swings creaked gently in the breeze.
Alec walked to the spot where he had fallen, where he had begged Lila to let him go. The earth was undisturbed, covered with fallen leaves. He stood there for a long time, the chill settling into his bones, as if waiting for something—an answer, a sign, anything to make sense of the nightmare that had consumed his life.
Then he saw it.
Half-buried in the dirt, something white caught his eye. He knelt down, his fingers brushing away the soil until he uncovered a single slip of paper. His heart hammered in his chest as he picked it up, his hands shaking so hard he could barely unfold it.
It was a note, written in Lila's familiar handwriting, the ink smudged and faded:
"I will always be with you."
Alec's breath caught, and he felt the weight of her words like a cold hand closing around his heart. For a moment, he almost thought he saw her—standing in the shadows at the edge of the trees, watching him with that same, unreadable expression she had worn the last time they had been together.
But when he blinked, she was gone. The wind whispered through the trees, and he felt the first drops of rain begin to fall. He stood there, letting the rain wash over him, the note crumpled in his hand.
It was over. Whatever hold Lila had on him had broken that night in the park, and though the scars would never truly fade, he knew he had survived. He was different now—stronger, more guarded—but he was alive.
He turned away, leaving the note where he had found it, and walked out of the park without looking back. The rain fell harder, soaking him to the skin, but he felt lighter somehow, as if the storm inside him had finally calmed.
And as he walked home, Alec understood that freedom wasn't about forgetting—it was about accepting the past, facing the darkness, and choosing to step back into the light.
