THE AIR IN SILCO'S LAIR WAS HEAVY,

laced with the faint scent of shimmer and dampened metal. Ekko's heart raced as he crept past the flickering lights and ever-watchful eyes of Silco's lackeys. It had taken him months to track Powder down—no, Jinx now. But no matter what she called herself, she was still the girl he'd known, the one he'd laughed with, the one he'd tried to protect.

It wasn't the first time he'd found himself searching for her . Years ago, before everything changed, Powder was often play a sort of one sided game, hiding from him. Back then, it had been Powder who'd peeked out from behind Aviva, the two of them whispering and giggling at some joke. He remembered Aviva, too—sharp-tongued and observant, with a way of looking at you like she knew all your secrets.

He had spent months—no, years—searching for Powder. His Powder. The girl he grew up with, laughed with, and shared dreams with.
But what he found here wasn't her.
The room was a mess of blueprints, half-finished contraptions, and weapons, all scattered like the mind of their creator.

Powder—or Jinx, as she now called herself—stood in the center of the room, surrounded by scattered blueprints, discarded weapons, and half-finished contraptions. She had grown taller, leaner, and wilder. Her blue braids swayed as she spun to face him, her grin unsettlingly wide.

"Ekko," she said, her voice carrying a singsong edge as her eyes darted over him. Ekko blinked, taken off guard by her appearance. He wasn't expecting this.

"I've been looking for you," he managed to say, his voice firm but laced with a desperate tenderness. "Powder... I've been trying to find you for years. I'm here to take you home."
Jinx's smile faltered, but only slightly. "Home? Ugh." She waved a dismissive hand, spinning back to her latest gadget and poking at it with a wrench. "I already have a home, Ekko. And a family." She leaned closer to him with a playful glint in her eyes. "Don't need rescuing. But thanks for trying, hero boy."
