A few days later, Katie invited Caitlin to a casual get-together with some of her friends. It was a lively evening, filled with music, chatter, and more laughter. Katie stayed close to Caitlin, always checking to make sure she was comfortable.
At one point, as they stood on the balcony overlooking the city, Katie turned to Caitlin. "I'm glad you came tonight. You seemed like you needed to unwind."
Caitlin smiled. "I did. Thanks for bringing me."
Katie's expression softened. "I mean it, Caitlin. You're important to me. I hope you know that."
The words caught Caitlin off guard. There was a weight to Katie's voice, an honesty that made Caitlin's heart skip. She swallowed hard, searching for the right response.
"You're important to me too," Caitlin said quietly.
Katie smiled, but there was something else in her eyes—something Caitlin couldn't quite read.
Over the following weeks, the tension between them grew, subtle but undeniable. A lingering glance, a hand resting too long on a shoulder, a moment of silence that felt heavier than it should. Caitlin found herself thinking about Katie more often, her presence a constant in her mind.
One evening, after another quiet dinner at Caitlin's place, Katie leaned in as they said goodbye. What had been a friendly hug suddenly felt different. Caitlin's heart raced as she felt Katie's breath close to her ear, the warmth of her presence overwhelming.
When they pulled back, Katie hesitated, her eyes searching Caitlin's. "Caitlin..."
Caitlin froze, torn between fear and something that felt a lot like hope. "Yeah?"
But Katie shook her head, stepping back. "Nothing. Get some rest, okay?"
Caitlin nodded, watching as Katie walked out the door. But as the door closed, Caitlin realized she didn't want to keep ignoring what was happening between them.
The next time Caitlin saw Katie, things felt different. There was an unspoken awareness between them, a tension that neither of them could ignore. Katie had invited Caitlin to a low-key dinner at her apartment, and despite her usual casual demeanor, Caitlin couldn't help but notice Katie seemed a little nervous—fidgeting with her hands, glancing at Caitlin a bit more often than usual.
Dinner was quiet, but not uncomfortable. They talked about their recent games, upcoming fixtures, and the usual banter about teammates. But underneath it all, Caitlin felt like they were both tiptoeing around something bigger.
After they finished eating, Katie poured them both a glass of wine and gestured toward the couch.
"Alright, enough football talk," Katie said with a grin. "Let's just chill for once."
Caitlin laughed, sitting down next to Katie. "Chill? You? That's new."
Katie smirked. "Even I can take a break sometimes."
They talked about everything and nothing, the conversation flowing easily as always. But as the night wore on, the space between them seemed to shrink. At some point, Caitlin realized how close they were sitting, their knees almost touching.
Katie set her glass down on the coffee table and turned to Caitlin, her expression uncharacteristically serious. "Caitlin, can I ask you something?"
Caitlin's heart skipped a beat. "Of course."
Katie hesitated, her gaze dropping to her hands before meeting Caitlin's eyes again. "Have you... ever thought about us? About... this?" She gestured vaguely between them, her voice softer than Caitlin had ever heard it.
