If it wasn't for the early beams of morning light peaking through my bedroom window I probably would have slept much longer. I felt exhausted like I hadn't slept at all, but that was normal when I cried. It seemed to drain the life right out of me which is why I tried my best to avoid it.
Slowly opening my eyes to rise out of bed, I could hear the barely perceptible squeaks of Jack and Gus waiting for their breakfast. With a sigh I mentally shook myself, forcing my body out of the warm comfort of my bed.The Almost identical white mice stared at me expectantly. "Alright, alright I'm coming!" I said to them with a chuckle. It was nice seeing these two in much better health! Poor Jack had practically been emaciated, I had found him guarding gus who was unlucky enough to find himself in a rat trap. Clearly the cheese in the middle had been too tantalizing for them to ignore. If it had been Jack getting the cheese I had no doubts it would have been easier task but being so weak it was clear that Gus felt like it was the only way to help his companion.
"Gus your little leg is looking much better today!" I exclaimed happily " How do you two feel about taking a walk today? We can start working on recuperating your leg muscles"
They seemed wary to leave their new safe haven but when I motioned to my pocket they seemed to mutually agree some fresh air might be nice, as long as this gigantic girl was there to protect them.I quickly went about getting ready brushing my long blond hair and making sure my beautiful blue eyes weren't too puffy, It was one of the only traits I had Inherited from my mother.
Her eyes were bright like the sky when she was happy and a storming ocean when she was upset, although they rarely ended up that way.
After I had finished I ran down the stairs, was taking two at a time heading for the kitchen. I wanted to eat a quick breakfast and head outside, I was worried that my father would attempt another oh so convincing conversation about my potential step mother to be. Grabbing some fresh bread and lathering it with butter and jam I pushed it into my mouth to rush out the door, although not before grabbing some cheese for my pocket passengers.I decided to visit the town square where a beautiful fountain gurgled at its center. despite all the hustle and bustle of the village, I found it quite relaxing. One of my favorite things to do was to watch people go about their day pretending to know what it is they had in store, in all reality I had no clue and was just using my imagination to fill in the blanks.
I dug gently into my pockets to pull out Jack and Gus and placed them on the side of the fountain where I was sitting, I then handed them a piece of cheese each. "Don't be wandering off now, who knows what trouble lies around the corner for you two around here." But the mice were too focused on their current meals.By the time they had finished I was well into my thoughts, trying my best to see my father's perspective. But with it being such a sore subject it was difficult indeed. How could he do this? Did he actually love mother? This felt like such a betrayal to her memory!
So deep in my thoughts I didn't notice a small shadowy figure slinking closer and closer to Jack and Gus. But it didn't take long for them to notice and become distressed. Snapping me out of my mental battle it was then that I noticed the sneaking cat that was about to pounce.
"No!" I yelled trying to scare the feline away but it was too late it had already launched itself in an attempt to catch my furry friends. As fast as I could I threw my arms over Jack and Gus in my best attempt to protect them and with luck I managed to do exactly that. The cat fell flat on top of my head and scratched me with claws that felt like they had recently been sharpened.
"Ouch you dang cat, that hurts" I screamed as I tried to discreetly put the mice back in my pocket and remove the cat as best I could.
"Oh Lucifer!" A woman suddenly appeared and chided the cat. "I'm so sorry my dear, Lucifer here always seems to have a mind of his own. He's my daughter's cat you see and she has never been one for discipline" The woman quickly pried the stubborn cat from my head.
"Oh dear!" She exclaimed "He seems to have given you quite a few scrapes. "Why don't I take you home and clean you up a bit?"
More irritated than angry and not wanting to explain this whole debacle to my father I contemplated it for a moment. Well she did say she has daughter's... And she does seem rather nice, I don't think she means me any ill will.
With a nodd I turned to her " I would really appreciate that, show me the way!" She nodded back and smiled, she then turned to show me to her home but as she did her smile turned into a smirk. Having her back to me I didn't see it. I continued to smile at the thought of maybe making some real friends.
