The morning of the grand reopening arrived with an unexpected calm. Lila had barely slept the night before, her mind racing with the many details she had left to prepare. But when the sunlight streamed through the windows of the tea room, warm and soft, a surprising sense of peace washed over her. The hard work had been done, and now, all she had to do was let it unfold.
She stood at the front of the tea room, her fingers brushing over the new menu cards she had designed, glancing around the room as if seeing it for the first time. The pale blue walls, the fresh flower arrangements, the quiet clink of cups and saucers—it was everything she had hoped for. And yet, there was still something missing, something that felt incomplete.
Her thoughts drifted to Theo, to the way he had been distant the night before. She had thought maybe tonight, maybe the reopening would be the moment she'd finally be able to confront whatever it was between them. But she wasn't sure if she was ready. Or if he was.
As she arranged the final touches on the counter, the door jingled, and she looked up, startled. A small group of customers had arrived—three women in their late twenties, chatting excitedly as they stepped in.
"Good morning!" one of them greeted warmly, her eyes sparkling as she took in the cozy atmosphere of the room. "This place looks even better than I remembered!"
Lila smiled, pushing her nervous thoughts aside. "Welcome! I'm so glad you could make it today. What can I get you?"
The women settled at a table by the window, and Lila quickly went into action. It was strange, how the moment they'd walked in, she'd felt an overwhelming sense of pride. She had created this space. It wasn't perfect, not yet, but it was hers. And that was enough.
As she worked, the door continued to chime, and more customers filtered in, creating a gentle hum of conversation and the soft clinking of tea cups. Her heart swelled with each new face, with each satisfied sip. Slowly, as the morning passed, she began to feel the familiar rhythm of the tea room, the quiet joy of people coming together to enjoy something simple but meaningful.
Theo, as always, appeared just as the last of the breakfast rush started to wind down. He had his hands tucked into his jacket pockets, his casual stride slow as he took in the room, a faint smile tugging at his lips.
"You've done it," he said, his voice low but filled with a quiet kind of admiration. "It looks... incredible."
Lila smiled back, her chest tightening. "Thanks. It's... everything I've dreamed of."
She paused, glancing over at the counter, her thoughts once again drifting to the unspoken tension that hung between them. The words she had wanted to say for so long were still locked in her throat. She wasn't sure how to bring them up, not when everything felt so fragile, so new.
"I, uh—" She stopped herself, not sure how to continue. She felt his presence like a weight in the room, and yet the space between them felt as wide as the distance between two galaxies.
Theo seemed to sense the shift in her mood. His eyes softened, and he stepped closer to the counter, leaning on it casually. "I know you've been working your ass off, Lila. But... if you need a break, just say the word. I'll be here."
There was a quiet warmth in his voice, but it was tinged with something more, something that felt just beyond reach. Lila swallowed, the words finally spilling out before she could stop herself.
"Why are you still here, Theo?" she asked, her voice quiet but sharp with curiosity.
Theo blinked, taken aback by the directness of her question. He didn't answer right away, and for a brief moment, the world seemed to pause as they both waited for his response.
"I—" He paused, running a hand through his hair, his eyes narrowing as he considered her question. "I guess... I guess I'm here because I want to be."
Lila felt her heart beat a little faster, a mixture of relief and confusion flooding her chest. She looked at him, unsure of what to say next. "But why? I mean... you don't owe me anything. And yet, every day you show up, like it's just... natural."
Theo met her gaze, his expression unreadable. "I guess it's because..." He exhaled slowly, as if trying to find the right words. "I see you, Lila. I see what you're trying to build. And I want to be a part of it."
Lila's breath caught in her throat. "But... I don't even know where this is going, Theo. I don't know what we're doing here. What I'm doing."
Theo took a small step closer, his voice lowering. "You don't need to have all the answers right now. None of us do. We're just... figuring it out."
His words, though simple, resonated deep inside her, and for the first time in weeks, the tight knot in her chest began to loosen, even if just a little. There was no grand declaration, no perfect moment to make sense of everything, but maybe that was the point. Maybe it didn't need to make sense right away.
Theo stepped back then, looking over his shoulder as a new group of customers arrived. "I'll go help with the back, if you need it," he said, his voice shifting back to its usual casual tone.
Lila nodded, her heart still racing but a newfound clarity settling in. "Thanks. I'll call you if I need you."
As Theo disappeared into the back, Lila stood there for a moment, her fingers gripping the edge of the counter. She wasn't sure what had just happened—whether it was a breakthrough or just another moment in time that had slipped by unnoticed.
But she did know one thing: Theo wasn't going anywhere. And neither was she.
