The subtle victories emboldened Abdullah and his allies, but the persistent shadow of Hanifah's influence kept them vigilant. The intercepted evidence led to the arrest of several key operatives, and the neighboring kingdom's move against Hanifah's merchant ally disrupted a significant source of her funding. However, as Othman and Mustapha had warned, Hanifah was not the type to relent quietly.
One morning, as Abdullah reviewed intelligence reports in his chambers, Othman entered, his face lined with concern.
"There's news," Othman said, handing Abdullah a sealed letter.
Abdullah opened it and scanned the contents. The message was brief but alarming:
Hanifah has secured support from a powerful faction within the military. They are planning to challenge the Crown under the guise of liberating the kingdom from foreign influence.
Abdullah clenched his jaw. "She's using patriotism as a shield. Clever."
Othman nodded grimly. "If even a fraction of the military sides with her, it could lead to open conflict. We can't afford a civil war, Abdullah."
Abdullah sat back, his mind racing. "Do we know which officers are involved?"
"Not yet," Othman replied. "But Mustapha is narrowing down the possibilities. He's confident he'll have names within the week."
"We don't have a week," Abdullah said sharply. "If Hanifah's plan gains traction, it could destabilize everything we've worked to restore."
Othman hesitated before saying, "There is one officer I trust to help us. General Kadir. He's fiercely loyal to the Crown and respected within the ranks. If we can bring him into our confidence, he might help us root out the conspirators."
Abdullah nodded. "Bring him in. Quietly. I want no leaks."
Later that evening, General Kadir arrived at the palace under the cover of darkness. He was a tall, imposing figure with sharp eyes and a commanding presence. As he entered the private council chamber, he bowed deeply.
"Your Royal Highness," Kadir said. "It is an honor."
Abdullah motioned for him to rise. "The honor is mine, General. I hear you are a man of integrity and loyalty. I need both now more than ever."
Kadir's expression hardened. "Whatever the Crown requires, I will deliver. But I must warn you, Your Royal Highness, the military is restless. Some feel ignored, others manipulated by whispers of change. Hanifah's rhetoric is finding fertile ground among them."
"Then we must act swiftly," Abdullah said. "I need you to help us identify the ringleaders and isolate them before they can act. Will you stand with us?"
Kadir met his gaze. "Always."
With Kadir's assistance, Mustapha and Othman began dismantling Hanifah's military support. Key officers were discreetly reassigned, their movements monitored closely. Messages meant to rally troops against the Crown were intercepted and countered with a campaign of unity and loyalty led by Kadir himself.
However, Hanifah anticipated these moves. Her operatives spread rumors of betrayal, painting Kadir as a puppet of the Crown. The tension among the ranks grew, and Abdullah knew the situation could boil over at any moment.
"We need a show of strength," Othman suggested during a late-night strategy meeting. "Something that reminds the people and the military that the Crown stands firm."
Abdullah frowned. "A public display risks escalation. If we misstep, we give Hanifah exactly what she wants-chaos."
Mustapha spoke up. "What if we turn her tactics against her? Let's expose her lies. Present the intercepted evidence of her dealings with foreign powers to the people and the military. If they see her as a threat to the kingdom, her support will crumble."
