The restaurant is too damn perfect. Too clean. Too polished. Too... fake. Everything's set up to look like a picture, and I'm just a part of it. The soft music, the clinking of glasses, the smell of overpriced food in the air-it's all a blur. But I can't enjoy any of it.

Lily's sitting across from me, her eyes trying to pull me back, trying to bring me into the moment. But I'm not there. I'm somewhere else. Somewhere darker.

She's been talking for a while now, but I've been tuned out, thinking about the mission. About what's coming. I don't have the luxury of focusing on anything else right now.

"Jak," Lily says, her voice pulling me back to her. "Are you even listening to me?"

I blink a couple of times, trying to look like I'm actually paying attention. "Yeah, Lil. I'm listening."

She's not buying it. I can see it in her eyes-the way she's looking at me, waiting for me to snap out of whatever the hell this is. "Jak, you've been distant. For weeks now. And I get it-you've been under pressure with mission's, but... this is different. You're not here. What's going on?"

I feel the weight of her words settle in my gut. I can't lie to her, not like this. Not when it's so obvious.

But the truth? I can't give her that. Not yet. Maybe never.

I let out a slow breath, trying to keep it together. "Lil, it's just... there's a lot of stuff on my plate right now. It's been a rough few weeks, that's all."

She doesn't believe me. I can see it on her face. She doesn't buy the excuses, but what the hell else can I say?

"Jak, this isn't just stress. You're shutting me out. And I can't stand it anymore," she presses, her voice quieter now, but her words hitting harder. "You've been lying to me. I can feel it. What's really going on?"
