Kinda an AU, but I head canon that this is some kind of dystopian future in which there are no humans. There are three types of animals; ones that are "fully evolved", meaning they walk upright and wear clothes and live like humans, such as the Octonauts and the Octo-Agents. Then there are the "half evolved" animals who can talk, but still lived and acted like their original species. So basically like all the animals the octonauts help in the show. Then there are the "unevolved" animals, who can't talk, and are exact copies of how we know them today. These animals are mostly livestock and animals who live in places that had very little human contact. If anyone has ever seen the show "Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts", think about this au like that.
