Last night, the Cahill family came over to our house for a welcoming dinner and I made a fool of myself. Not only did I completely ignore the cute girl, but I also got spaghetti sauce all over my face and new shirt. The worst part of it all is that she laughed at me.

The cute new girl in my neighborhood laughed at me.

It's always been hard for me to talk to new people, and as I walked into Scoil Eoin Primary School, my best friend reminded me of exactly why that was.

"Hey, Pa!" Hughie cheered, putting me in a chokehold and ruffling my hair with his fist.

I let out an embarrassing whine, trying to get out of his arms. "Hey, Hugh. Y'know, I'd really appreciate if you could stop doing that."

"Nah. I'm good." My stupid blond friend smiled. Speaking of stupid and blond, Gerard Gibson walked into step with us. "Gibs!"

"Who's your head teacher this year?"

Gibsie groaned, shaking his head. "I got Mrs. O'Callahan. What about you guys?"

Christ. That woman's pushing ninety and she's still teaching. "Mr. Truman."

"I got Mrs. McDowell. Apparently she's the youngest teacher for our grade." Hughie didn't seem too disappointed about his teacher.

Our trio continue walking to our classes, eventually splitting off.

"Ooh, Feely's got a crush!"

I rolled my eyes. "I do not! She just moved here five days ago, I can't possibly be crushing on her."

I watched Hughie and Gibsie exchange looks before laughing to each other. "Right, well, we'd have to meet her before she can date you anyway."

Gibsie nodded. "No one's gonna hurt our Feely."

"I'm only eight, chill. We're not going off to get married." I took a bite of my mom's homemade lemon bars, huffing out air in annoyance."

Hughie shook his head, smiling. "I still think we should meet her. This weekend, me and Gibs are gonna come over to 'play video games'," he said, making air quotations with his hands. "But you'll show us her house."

These two are lucky I like them.
