People call me a dead girl walking.

Mommy because she likes to say that when she took a body, I was in there. And she decided to keep me. But then she had to leave. But mommy wasn't my real mommy. My real mommy was dead. The mommy I knew was Lilith.

Daddy says maybe it would have been better if Mommy hadn't gone through with keeping me. Because the life I had been born into wasn't a nice one for little kids. But Daddy says he's happy she did. Because I remind him of my actual Daddy.

They passed me alone between them. But then Mommy disappeared and Daddy was scared of something. He didn't tell me. Just that my brother's couldn't find out about me. Or else I would be in danger. That's when Bela took me to keep me safe. She took me back to her family, but I had to call her Momma. And that I couldn't act confused when people called her Maggie.

I liked Bela's family. Bela said she adopted me. They didn't question it. I had my very own room next to Bela's. She taught me to swim and took me on horse rides. She became my mommy quickly. Her sister Beth and Beth's boyfriend Jimmy played with me whenever mommy was busy. Shawn and Arnold were fun as well, taking me out on the weekends to the park or to get ice cream. Annette's my Meemaw. She baked me cookies and helped take care of me when I was sick. And Hershel made me call him Pop-pop. He would read me bedtime stories and have me help him with the chores that had to do with the animals.

But then people started to get sick. Like Annette, Shawn, and Arnold. We didn't leave the farm that much anymore. So then it was just me and my new family.
