So, this time, because for some reason I enjoy torturing Apollo (Idk, I just do), we're going to be reacting to Chapter 32, specifically page 3 of it (at least in my book) and the...reveal of some information. So, with that said, on with the fic.
"Do we have to?" Apollo asked.
"Yes."
"Fuck you."
"Would you like to stay or leave?"
"...stay."
"Okay."
"What's going on?" Artemis asked, pitting a protective arm around her little brother.
"You'll see."
"Just get on with it." Apollo said, leaning into Artemis' touch.
"Alright, should I give a paragraph of context or get straight into it?" The question was really mor aimed at Meg, considering the context paragraph was about her.
"You can give the context." Meg said.
"Okay then."
'No, indeed.' Nero's tone had frayed like a weathered rope. 'We are better. We are stronger. We will build a glorious new world.' But these nonsense-spewing trees stand in our way, Meg. Like any invasive weeds, they must be burned. And the only way to do that is with a true conflagration - flames stoked by blood.'
"Okay, where is this guy and how soon can I punch him?" Artemis said.
"I do not know where he currently is but I'll tell you later."
"You'd better."
"I will, don't worry."
'Let us not involve the Beast, shall we?'
"Seriously, can I go turn him into a jackalope?" Artemis said.
"You can as soon as I find out where he is. Ready to continue?"
"If we must." Apollo muttered.
Finally, in my mind, something clicked.
"Please no." Apollo muttered.
"Sorry, but I work for the Fates."
"Well, they're assholes."
"I'm aware, but I like living, so I do what they say. I am sorry though."
I remembered how my father used to punish me centuries ago, when I was a going god learning the ways of Olympus. Zeus used to say, Don't get on the wrong side of my lightning bolts, boy.
As if the lightning bolt had a mind of its own - as if Zeus had nothing to do with the punishments he meted out upon me.
Don't blame me, his tone implied. It's the lightning bolt that seared every molecule in your body. Many years later, when I killed the Cyclopes who made Zeus's lightning, it was no rash decision. I'd always hated those lightning bolts. It was easier than hating my father.
"I'm going to kill him." Artemis said. "I'm going to fucking kill him."
"Please don't." Apollo said quietly as his sister held him protectively.
"Why the Hades not? He's a fucking asshole."
"I don't know why."
"You're an idiot." There was no malice in Artemis' tone (well, not at her brother), only care and love.
"I know."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't want you to know."
"Why not?" A hint of hurt made its way into her voice and just made Apollo feel even more guilty.
"I just didn't, I'm sorry."
"Hey, I'm not mad at you."
"You should be."
"And why is that?"
"Because I hid this from you, and I'm annoying, and let's be real, no one likes me anyway, and I'm a mess, and-"
"Shut up."
"What?"
"Just shut up, I can't stand to hear you say those things about yourself. You're amazing. You're my awesome, cocky, overconfident brother, and I fucking love you for it." Artemis pulled Apollo into a hug.
"Thank you." He mumbled into her shoulder. "I don't believe you though."
"You really should."
"I know."
"You okay?"
"No."
"Will you be?"
"I don't know."
"That's fine. You can be not okay for a while."
"I love you."
"I love you too."
(How did my angst-loving brain get to this? No idea, but I'm going with it because I'm feeling nice and like I should give you guys angst upon angst upon angst.)
