Joseph Miller let out a sigh as he ran his rough fingers across his eyes. He could feel the deep bags that had formed there as time has gone on. He was tired, no, truly exhausted, he had been this way since his wife died two years ago. It had been a transition to say the least, she used to be the one that would pick up their daughter from school and take her there, she was the one that helped with homework, she was there to hold down the fort while he went to work. He had to change positions so he could make more time to be with his daughter Suzy. He worked at an AI creation building. When he was a kid he never imagined that AI would take over as much as it had, many jobs had been deleted for AI workers, allowing more people to chase after other dreams. They controlled farming now, oil rigs, factory work, and unlike what a lot of people feared, it somehow worked. No fears of an AI uprising, no fears of people truly being replaced with AI. The world was in a wonderful place of prosperity that seemed almost impossible at first.
His job was to create personally using AI and put those personas into code and then transfer them nto machine like bodies of any kind. Some people that wanted to have a test run at raising kids often asked for an AI child that they could experiment with. Some wanted certain kinds of adult fun, and had AI personas created for that. Though those were not his department and required very long background checks to even be approved for one of those models. These personas could also be used by older people if they had lost their husband or wife, a way they could live out the rest of their days with the best memories of that person.
Joseph sighed as he looked at the screen in front of him. A persona had been typed in and he was still working out the kinks of it. Not that anything was wrong with it per say, but rather it was not what he wanted to do. He had been considering making one of these personas and getting a body for it, so it could maybe take some of the burden off him at home. He hated considering his life now a burden, sure he had to take a small pay change but that affected nothing. He got to spend more time with his daughter, which on paper sounded good, but she didn't want him.
She wanted her mommy back.
Her behavior had taken a hit as well, she just didn't listen anymore. Tantrums were more common when she wanted something and he would kindly say no. He often had to resort to getting her something, anything to get her to stop, she knew what she was doing. He had always babied her, his wife had handled the discipline aspect of it. He was scared of his own strength, he was a quite big man, a lot of people assumed he played basketball or was a linebacker or something. No he was just a computer nerd who was raised on one of the last true farms before his father sold it to an AI company. They still owned the land, and he had to teach them how to use these AI farmers. The more and better crops they made, the more money they got.
Joseph knew why his daughter, Suzy, missed her mommy. He could only do so much, but he was not the best at doing hair yet, he wasn't the best at playing with dolls, or just tasks that a mother could do. He could see how his daughter often cuddled up with some of her friends' mothers. Every day he spent putting these personas into codes, he spent time working on one of his own. His company allowed workers to use their tech to make a persona of their own for free. He knew most of the staff here, male or female, used it for a bit of a more adult style fun during their breaks to keep their energy up. One of his buddies had tried to convince him to do what he had done, maybe not make a mother for his daughter, but just a big sister persona that could watch and take care of her. It had worked wonders when he had lost his own wife.
"Come on, Joe." Joseph turned his chair around to look at the screen once more. All of his work was done, he had finished early. So he had time to work on this again, he was trying to consider which was the best route. Did he create an older sister for his daughter to look up to and maybe change her way, did he create maybe a little sister so the hope of being a responsible big sister would make Suzy change. He didn't want to do what others did and make a carbon copy of his wife, cause that would not help either of them get over it. Nor did he want to make a copy of his own mother whom they had lost seven years ago.
