The morning sunlight filtered through the curtains of Ohm’s apartment, casting a golden glow on the modest living space. The smell of fresh coffee mingled with the soft clinking of plates as Nanon placed their breakfast on the table—steamed rice, fried eggs, and stir-fried vegetables.
Ohm walked over to the kitchen wiping his sweat with a towel as he came back from jogging. “You’re up early,” he said.
Nanon offered a small smile as he poured coffee into a cup for Ohm. “Couldn’t sleep much. Thought I’d make breakfast.”
"You should rest well, Non. By the way thanks for the coffee." Ohm didn't notice but the nickname spread a blush on Nanon's cheeks.
Ohm sat at the small dining table, sipping his coffee and stealing glances at Nanon, who was arranging plates with a quiet efficiency.
The warmth of the meal filled the room as they ate, exchanging light conversation, Ohm often praising Nanon for his cooking. But just as he was finishing his coffee, his phone buzzed insistently. Frowning, he picked it up and stepped aside to take the call.
When he returned, his expression was unreadable, a mix of focus and hesitation. “That was the precinct,” Ohm said, setting the phone on the table. “They’ve found something. A lead in the human trafficking case.”
Nanon froze, his chopsticks pausing mid-air. His eyes widened slightly, but he said nothing.
Ohm noticed and immediately regretted his bluntness.
Nanon tried to compose himself, he asked, “Is everything okay?”
Ohm softened his tone looking at the boy infront of him. “It’s about the case. We might have found a lead. It’s just a clue for now, but it might help us figure out who’s behind this. I... I need to go.”
“Then you should, it’s important.” Masking his emotions quickly, Nanon said quietly, setting down his chopsticks.
Ohm hesitated, his brows knitting together. “But leaving you here alone... after everything—”
“I’ll be fine,” Nanon interrupted gently. “I can take care of myself. You have to do this, P’Ohm. For me and... for others like me.”
Ohm ran a hand through his hair, torn between his duty and his instinct to protect Nanon. “Alright,” he said reluctantly. “But promise me you’ll stay inside and call if you need anything.”
"But I don't have a phone," Nanon hesitated, his hands tightening around a folded shirt. "I’ve never owned one."
Ohm was a bit surprised at first but then his expression softened. "Nanon, how are you supposed to reach me if something happens? Or if you need something while I’m not here?"
Nanon shrugged slightly, offering a small smile. "I’ll be okay, P’Ohm. You have everything here, what else could I need? Please don’t bother."
Ohm stepped closer, resting a hand on Nanon’s shoulder. "It’s not about being a bother. It’s about your safety. What if there’s an emergency or if you need help?"
Nanon looked down, feeling a mix of guilt and gratitude for Ohm’s concern. Had he ever thought anyone except his mother could be worried about him like this! "Don't worry na phi, I'll be fine."
"You should go." Nanon reassured him with a faint smile. “Your work is more important. Besides, I’ll keep myself busy.”
Ohm nodded reluctantly, still unconvinced.
After breakfast, Ohm gathered his things, pausing at the door to glance back at Nanon. “Lock the door behind me, okay?”
“I will,” Nanon replied, walking him to the door.
