The world was all wrong, but Kagami managed to find one good thing left in it.

KagamixFem!Kuroko

This is based off the prompt I used in the Shorty Contests! which is: A character is stuck in another dimension and to help him/her find a way out is (canon character of your choice). The two traverse the strange world until they find a way back to the real world.

Not a lot of people really seemed to grab hold of this prompt and do it, which is a bummer because me and Shattered really liked it (she helped me come up with it). So I've decided to make something of it.

-------------------

The feathers were long and thick and of the blackest kind. A single feather was as long as half his arm and was silky smooth to touch.

He found it drifting in the wind while hiking up a mountain and was so transfixed by it that he narrowly missed it hitting him square in the face. It was just a feather... And to some that wouldn't mean anything, but for Kagami, it was hope.

You see, in this world no other life existed; or at least, none that Kagami could find.

The brute had woken up painfully in this strange, empty world. He had been unconscious and drifting until he was abruptly awakened by being tossed against a harsh surface. He had opened his red eyes to this strange plane of existence.

Because that's what it was, or what it had been at least... Like a desert, only with no sand, just a lavender flat surface and green sky that stretched on and on.

Kagami had finally reached a type of... land shrouded in multi-colored plants. As if a rainbow came down and painted a rain forest. He had kept walking until he made it to a mountain. His normally large appetite hadn't reared its head so he figured that maybe he wouldn't have to worry about hunger in this strange world.

There was something he was seeking, a strong something that drove him on, something that he couldn't put a name to. It was that something that drove him to climb up the mountain in search of it. His subconscious desperately believed that whatever it was would be at the top.

He kept the feather as a reminder that there could be life found in this lifeless world. It was something that served to give him more strength as he climbed the steep side.

There wasn't a sun in the sky, but it felt hot, almost like there was some type of heat source hidden in the now hazel sky above. Kagami had worked up a sweat climbing that when he reached the top, he panted as he doubled over. Kagami was a fit individual, but it felt like his energy was slowly being drained.

He raised his head as the air felt clearer and started looking around. He suddenly saw rustling black feathers and then they moved quickly around the corner of the wall of jade green rocks.

"Hey!" Kagami shouted and started running after whatever it could be.

He turned the corner and looked wildly around until he spotted dark feathers sticking out of navy blue bushes above lime green rocks.

"Hey, um, could you help me? I've been stuck in this strange world and you're the first thing I've seen that's alive like me." Kagami knew he sounded desperate, desperate to not be alone anymore.

The feathers shifted until they unraveled slightly to reveal a pale face with short light blue hair. Large light blue eyes stared at him and Kagami felt his breath caught.

It wasn't a type of bird like he thought, it was a girl--someone like him!

But as the girl turned around to spread her wings, he realized she was something more than what he was.

"Hello." A calm and gentle sounding voice came out as the girl-bird greeted him. Her face was blank, like a true poker face that Kagami couldn't hope to match. A dark feather-like dress covered her bodice modestly and black feathers sprouted out from her shoulders and arms.

"Hi!" Kagami beamed, excited that she could talk - and in Japanese no less!

The girl tilted her head to the side though no emotion played on her face. "Who are you?"

"Oh, um, Kagami Taiga."

"Kaga... mi... Tai-ga?" She tried sounding it out slowly and the dark redhead nodded eagerly.

"Yeah! Uh... Do you have a name?" He refrained from asking 'what' she was, he didn't want to seem impolite and scare her off.

She nodded, "Kuro.... I cannot remember the rest."

Kagami nodded then, "Kuro...." He looked over her black feathers that sprouted from her arms and back. "It means black."

That made Kuro smile, and Kagami found himself staring at her more.

"What brings you to my nest?" Kuro asked him as she walked to the edge to look out.

"Oh, um, I-I found this feather and went in search of you." Kagami held up the feather and the girl-bird came closer to gaze at it.

Kagami gulped at how close she was but didn't dare back down.

"Ah, yes. This belongs to me." And then she gazed at him. "But since Kaga found it, I will let Kaga keep it."

Kagami blinked before he slowly drew it back to him. "Okay... Thanks," he responded with a smile and then Kuro jumped up on a ledge. "What is this place? How can I get out?"

"This place is a world that is not a world. A void of vast imaginings all pertaining to the mind and its wonders." Kuro then looked at him with a mysterious aura. "Finding the exit is hard. No one can do it alone, which is why I've been stuck here for so long." She gazed at him more as Kagami took this in. "So maybe I can help Kaga find a way out."

Kagami gulped and simply nodded. "We can do it together."

That made the mysterious girl-bird smile, and Kagami could have sworn he saw emotion flash across her face.

"Very well, we will depart soon." And with that, Kuro flew off the cliff and Kagami - heart pounding - wretched forward to watch as she flew over the strange terrain.

He waited there for her return, prepared to do whatever it took to leave this world and find the one he belonged to.
