Samar's POV
I wake up with a jolt and look around, disoriented. That's when I see Maryam wrapping a blanket over me.
"Sorry I woke you up," she says softly. "Believe me, I was being as quiet as I could."
The bright sky frames her face, with the full moon shining down on us. I realize I am lying on the balcony, my mother's favorite spot, which is more like a rooftop.
"What are you doing?" I ask her, my voice still groggy from sleep.
Maryam smiles, "Making sure you don't feel cold," she replies.
She glances at the couch and adds, "Isn't it a bit small for both of us?"
I look at her in confusion.
She climbs into the blanket beside me, nestling her head on my arm. "It's beautiful," she says, her gaze fixed on the moon.
The sky is a brilliant canvas of stars, with not a cloud in sight. The moon, in its full bloom, casts a silver glow over us. The soothing sound of waves in the background adds to the serenity of the moment.
Maryam lifts her eyes to meet mine, and I'm struck by the intensity of her gaze. She stares at me with an unblinking focus, as if trying to see right through me.
I gently turn her head back towards the sky using the same arm she's lying on. "Look at the moon" My hand cradles her head, and I feel her soft hair against my skin.
She turns her head back towards me,"I am looking at it." She says. I feel a flush rise to my cheeks as I lift my other hand to cover my face. Maryam gently removes it, her smile illuminating the night. "Do not hide my moon," she says. "Let me gaze at it."
I turn my face away, my blush deepening. "Love stop," I murmur.
Maryam hovers over me, her eyes burning with an inner light. She gently turns my face back towards hers, and I'm lost in the depths of her gaze. The moon shines brightly beside her face, but its beauty is eclipsed by hers. I see a deep sense of affection for me, a love that radiates from her very being.
Her eyes are filled with a warmth and tenderness that makes my heart skip a beat. In this moment, I feel like I can see right into her soul.
Maryam puts her head on my chest and hugs me tightly. I can sense the depth of her emotions, the sincerity of her feelings.
Curious, I ask, "Love, can I ask a question?"
Maryam's grip on me tightens. "Ask as many as you want," she says, her voice muffled against my chest. "I missed you a lot this past week. Now I only want to hear you."She adds.
I smile, feeling my heart swell with emotion. "When did you fall in love with me?" I ask.
There is a long pause before She says,"I think it was when you agreed to play badminton with the NGO kids for me even though you dont like kids," she says, her tone soft. "Or maybe when you went to that picnic date and participated in that silly game for me. Perhaps it was when you got drenched in the rain with me, or when you sent me flowers with handwritten notes all the way from Hong Kong."
Her voice cracks with emotion as she continues. "Maybe it was when you flew all the way back from Hong Kong to take care of me when I was sick. Or perhaps it was when you helped Roshni and her mother, just to see me smile. "Or maybe," she whispers, "Maybe it was when I discovered why you call me 'Love'.It was the same name your mother uses to call you."
Maryam lifts her head, her eyes sparkling with tears. "I still have a number of reasons," she says, her voice barely above a whisper. "A number of moments when and how I fell in love with you."
