Rayan's POV

Maryam appears catatonic, her eyes fixed on Samar's lifeless form. She clutches his hand tightly, her face expressionless. No tears fall, no words escape her lips. It's as if the shock has numbed her entirely.

I kneel beside her, desperate to break through her trance-like state. I search for words, any words, to make her understand the gravity of the situation. But before I can speak, my gaze falls upon Samar's chest. It rises, ever so slightly.

My heart skips a beat. "Ambulance!" I yell, already knowing they're on the way. The medical team rushes to Samar's side, and I turn to Maryam, trying to rouse her from her stunned silence.

"Maryam, he's alive," I say, my voice shaking with relief. "Samar's alive."

Maryam's eyes lift to meet mine, and tears immediately well up in them. A glimmer of hope flickers across her face.

Just then, a medical team member arrives with a stretcher. They carefully lift Samar's body, and Maryam's hand is forced to release its grip. She looks at her empty hand, then back at Samar, her eyes brimming with tears.

The medical team begins to rush Samar away, and Maryam instinctively rises to follow.

......................

I stand frozen in the waiting room, my eyes fixed on Waqas's ashen face as the doctor delivers the devastating news. "The bullet has caused extensive damage to Samar's internal organs. We're doing everything we can, but...I have to be honest with you...the chances of survival are slim. Around 10%."

My heart sinks, weighed down by the crushing reality. Waqas's eyes well up with tears, his face contorted in anguish. Anneanne's sobs are the only sound in this moment of silence, her body shaking with grief. Ayesha and her grandmother try to console her, but their words of comfort are lost in the sea of despair.

Maryam, sitting beside Anneanne, seems numb, her expression frozen in shock. Her eyes stare blankly ahead, unseeing and unresponsive. I feel a pang of sorrow, wanting to reach out and comfort her, but unsure of how.

Mom what have you done

Thought of Mom being arrested cross my mind, how am I gonna face Alia, what I would say to her.

The doctor's words breaks my thought. My mind wanders to the operating room, where Samar's life hangs in the balance. I can almost see the surgeons frantically working to save his life.

Suddenly, a commotion erupts from the operating room. "Cardiac arrest!" someone shouts. Waqas's eyes widen in horror as he struggles to stand, his body trembling with fear.

I feel like I'm trapped in a nightmare, unable to wake up. The scene is chaotic, with surgeons and nurses scrambling to revive Samar. Even the excellent surgeons seem uncertain, their faces etched with concern.

I turn to Maryam, but she seems oblivious to the chaos unfolding just a few feet away. Her eyes remain fixed on some point in front of her, her face a mask of numbness. I feel a surge of desperation, wanting to shake her out of her trance-like state, but unsure of how.

The silence is oppressive, punctuated only by the sound of the medical team's frantic efforts to revive Samar. I stand there, frozen in uncertainty, my heart heavy with fear of listening to the words that Samar is dead.

After a grueling ten-hour surgery, the doctors finally emerge from the operating room, their faces etched with exhaustion. "Mr. Waqas, the surgery was successful," one of the doctors announces, his voice measured. "However, Samar will need to be shifted to the ICU ward for close monitoring. The next few days will be critical in determining his survival."
