A gut wrenching scream erupts in my throat, but no sound escapes my parted lips. Sharp screams and pleas for help are drowned by the gunshots and explosions tearing down the city. My home.
I stumble to my feet, staggering towards the road, pressing my hand firmly against the wound on my abdomen and using my other hand to wipe away the tears escaping from my eyelids. I need to find mum.
I look around, at the chaos, the piercing screams cutting through the night like a blade. Devastated faces around me blend together, a tapestry woven in the threads of terror. I start shaking and fear engulfs me into utter numbness as I struggle to see from the pain blinding me and the feeling of my limbs melting from within.
My knees hit the ground at the same time I catch a glimpse of a horde of soldiers marching towards a mother and her baby. Terrified, I start to crawl away, under a fallen roof and my eyes barely registered the flicker of light before the shattering sound struck me like a slap. T̶h̶e̶y̶ k̶i̶l̶l̶e̶d̶ t̶h̶e̶m̶.̶
I just stood there. I watched it happen. And I did nothing. Tears continue to steam down my eyes like a waterfall but this time I don't try to stop them. My mum. I want my mum. I wait for the soldiers to leave before I start moving again, trying my best not to look at the bodies surrounding me, suffocating me. S̶o̶ ̶m̶u̶c̶h̶ ̶b̶l̶o̶o̶d̶.̶ My eyes are scanning the scene looking desperately for my mum as if my life depended on it, but it's like she disappeared into thin air.
I call out to her.
Nothing.
I do it again.
No response.
My heart is beating so violently I think it might actually burst out of my chest. But then, when I spot her green cardigan and curly brown hair, a wave of relief comes crashing over me. My feet take off immeadiately, running towards her at full speed ignoring the soldiers beside me and the explsosions ringing in my ears.
I kneel down next to her hugging her tightly, burrying my face into the curve of her shoulder and breathing into her familiar scent. But she doesn't react. Instead she just lies there, her limps clumsily rested beside her sides, drowning in a pool of blood and her hair tousled, painted with streaks of blood running down her forehead. Something's wrong. "Mum?"
The word escapes my lips before I even have time to process what is going on and I can feel the panic settling in the pit of my stomach and clawing at my throat, rendering me helpless. The havoc around me blurs and I am so suffocated by my grief that it's as though invisible walls are crushing me.
No.
no.
no.
no.
no.
no.
no.
no.
no.
My breath hitches as realisation crushes over me like a tidal wave. She can't be dead. My mum can't be gone.
