“Come on lazy. Get your butt outta bed.” A unrecongizable voice says.
I open my eyes. My room is filled with new daylight and my back is stiff from sleeping on my satchel and ceremonial gems.
“We don’t got all day.” The voice says again.
I lift my head and look up at a women with long dark straight brown hair. She is plain in looks but has an expression that could kill. All my memory of last night comes back.
“Sorry.” I mutter getting out of bed grabbing my bag off the floor and placing my new sword on my belt.
“The names Melonyn. Welcome to bootcamp.” The woman says tossing her brown hair.
“Just let me say goodbye to my brother.” I say quietly and quickly walk to his room.
I enter Culley’s room and see that he is awake.
“Culley, I have to go. But don’t worry I will be back, okay?” I say delicately.
“I know.” He says choking back sobs.
I rush towards him, gathering him up into a big hug. I hold him for a few seconds knowing I should be going. I kiss him on the cheek and whisper, “Flora Goodbye.”
I stand up and leave. I do not look back. Mother’s door is closed, I have a feeling it would be too hard for her to say goodbye. I kiss her door and hold back a tear.
“Alright. I’m ready to go.” I say to Melonyn.
“C’mon Eyas.” Melonyn says, already at the front door.
I follow her out and turn around to take a last look at my house.
“I’m going to miss you.” My voice shakily whispers.
Forcing myself to turn around I am greeted by Melonyn and a horse she brought with her. Her own horse prances back and forth, waiting to go. Nimbly I jump on putting my bag holding my clothes on the horse. I kick the sides of the horse and I follow Melonyn out. Goodbye golden trees, I think. I notice Melonyn has picked up her speed to a gallop. I follow suit petting the black horse’s mane.
We travel through The City, just straight through to the other side. I think of the fact I will never be back to the weapon shop next week as I promised. I will never go to school again, for when I come back I will be too old. I say a prayer of goodbye to The Great Tree as we pass it and from then on I only look forward, no looking back.
I guess we are heading East along the Four Wind River for maybe four hours. We do not stop and the insides of my thighs are beginning to hurt. In school I only took one class on animals, I remember Willow took eight. She was looking to get into taking care of animals, which I honestly don’t get at all. But that was what she wanted. I will miss Willow. Even though she always found a way to get me into some sort of dilemma.
By noon we reach a clearing where a couple horses are already set up. Beside them are Miles and a man who must be chauffering him as well. Miles looks exhausted, as if he hasn’t slept in days and looks as if he has done a great deal of crying. He must have been chosen as well. Which is odd, how could he protect people from the Outsiders? Miles doesn’t even look as if he has gone through puberty yet.
Melonyn jumps off her horse and I follow suit. Thankful to be able to stretch out my legs. I just about collapse to the ground they are so sore. Melonyn goes off to talk to the other man. They seem to be having an important disscusion. However, I feel as if all my brain cells just vanished on the trip to this small grassy clearing. The river is crystal clear and roars in my ears but for some reason it’s calming. I saunter over to Miles who is curled into a ball leaning against the hard surface of a small tree. For some reason I can’t bring myself to say anything. I sit there and breathe. What else can I do?
