HERMIONE GRANGER, the brightest witch of the age. a gryffindor at her finest, brave and daring. but also sad and broken. as the months after voldemort's defeat carried on, the more her typical sunshine spirit became dull and emotionless. as the days grew shorter in the winter, her mind couldn't help but think of the family she used to have. parents who cared for her and loved her deeply, ones that were there for her through her journey at hogwarts, ones that would never remember her.
it was her own fault, really. she would never forgive herself and knew that one day she would have to move passed it. but that's not right now. after coming back to hogwarts to complete her last year, ronald weasley and hermione grew apart. leaving her to only really talk to her other best friend harry potter and luna lovegood. ron and hermione didn't date very long but the pressure to keep the image of the golden trio was weighing and ron couldn't take her always talking about her family.
although they weren't as close as they used to be, ron still invited both harry and hermione to christmas with his family. she graciously declined. the people she really wanted to spend the holidays with had a whole other life, one without any knowledge of her. she didn't want to bring down the mood and decided she would stay at the castle for christmas break. she didn't mind, really. it just meant five days of quiet. more time to her books and even more time to her own thoughts.
her thoughts could be lethal but she never let it get that far. the days before holiday break were slowly dwindling down to just a few left. first and second years bustled through the halls with excitement to see their families again. while most fourth and fifth years were slightly sad to leave their friends. the upperclassmen were just happy to get a break. the snow had started to fall, covering the ground in a beautiful white blanket. the air was chilly and the atmosphere was spirited. as the professors decorated the halls and classrooms, students decorated their doors, or built snowmen.
hermione found solace in watching the sun shine on the snowy covered towers and the distant fields. the way the light bounced off the covered towers was mesmerizing. with the sky turning all shades of pinks and oranges, it was a captivating sight. hermione would sit in the cove of her window every morning with a cup of warm cocoa and some light reading before getting dressed for her first class. two days before christmas break was a big exam and multiple pop quizzes. fortunately, with voldemort gone, hermione could focus on her studies fully and was at the top of the class. no surprises there.
that was until the last week of november when the air started to shift. the colder nights led to lack of sleep for the young witch. her mind would race to her parents, she could never get her brain to shut down. she started missing classes and skipping homework all together. "mione, this isn't like you" harry said, stroking the back of her head. she had her knees tucked up to her chest in the back of the library with ron and harry sitting next to her.
she felt somewhat numb, the idea of going though christmas alone was not one she was fond of. the boys understood but never fully understood. harry might have completely lost his parents but at least they weren't still alive and had absolutely no recollection of who he was. her chest felt heavy as she inhaled the cool air of the library. she spoke no words to either boy, like many time before this. she felt the world was on her shoulders and she didn't want to deal with it right now. she just wanted to crawl into a hole and stay there.
maybe a few days break by herself would do her some good. or it could make things worse.
