The sound of rain pouring could be heard as Ruby sat in Bill's room. Along with that at rain came the sound of her mother playing a melody she couldn't quite name on the piano.
Georgie and Ruby stared out at the storm through the window. "Sure we won't get in trouble, Bill?" Georgie questioned nervously.
The six year old was very hesitant to leave the house without his older brother, Billy, despite his eight, almost nine, year old sister being willing to go out with him.
"You can stay inside if you want, Georgie. I can just go without you since you're so scared." Ruby teased.
Though she knew he wouldn't let her go outside alone. Georgie might be afraid, but he was more afraid of what could happen to Ruby if she was alone. Bullies are not uncommon around Derry, after all.
"But then you would be all by yourself. I can't leave you alone." He stated.
"Don't be a wuss. I'd go with you if I weren't dying." Billy cut in with a cough as he finished making the paper boat the two younger siblings had pestered him into making. They had claimed it was so they could play with the puddles properly.
How can you play in puddles without a paper boat?
"You're not dying." Ruby and Georgie said at once. This happened quite a bit. They were often confused for twins at times when it did. It also had the amusing effect of creeping people out.
Well, amusing to them.
"S-stop that." Billy said, referring to the in sync sentence. It tended to weird him out too, only adding to their amusement. "And you didn't see the vomit coming out my nose this morning." He threw his tissue at them, causing Ruby to recoil away from the snotty tissue in disgust.
"Now g-g-go get the wax Georgie." Billy ordered.
Georgie hesitated. "From the cellar?"
Ruby knew that Georgie was afraid of the cellar. He thought that there were monsters lurking within the darkness of it. She always thought he was just being silly. Spiders? Most likely. But not monsters.
"You want it to float don't you?"
"Why can't Ruby get it?" Georgie asked him. Ruby gasped and looked at him with a look of mock hurt.
"You would want your own sister to go down the dark, cold, cellar all by herself?" She questioned as she put a hand to her chest, acting like she was physically wounded by his words. He just responded with a look mixed with annoyance and amusement.
"Both of you can go get it." Billy interrupted, amused by their antics.
And so, the two younger siblings ran downstairs, catching a glimpse of their mother playing the piano in the parlor. They arrived in the kitchen and slowly walked toward the cellar door. Georgie had a look of hesitance and fear on his face that made Ruby attempt to comfort him.
"Don't worry, Georgie. I won't let any monster get you." Ruby said as she placed a gentle and comforting hand on his shoulder. He glanced at her and gave a shaky smile, but she knew that her attempt at comfort helped to calm his nerves only slightly.
They flung the door open and gazed down into the darkness. Georgie put his arm through the threshold to turn on the light, but it didn't turn on. This made them even more hesitant to venture into the seemingly endless, dark void.
The walkie talkie they had grabbed from Billy's room crackled to life, making both of them jump, startled.
"C'mon! H-Hurry up!" Billy's voice demanded over the walkie talkie. They quickly recovered. Ruby slowly made her way toward the steps with Georgie.
