The moment Jeon Jungkook stepped out of his dorm, the campus air practically vibrated with tension. He wasn’t even sure what had caused the latest conflict, but it was obvious that his friends were already deep in it.
“Jeon!” A voice called from his side, and Jungkook turned to see Jimin jogging up to him, panting slightly. “You’re late! They’re about to start!”
“Start what?” Jungkook asked, though he could already guess.
Jimin gave him a look. “The usual. Kim Taehyung’s minions are on the other side of the wall.”
Of course, they were. Jungkook sighed, his grip tightening on the strap of his backpack. He didn’t have the energy for this today.
By the time he reached the scene, it was already in full swing. On one side of the low campus wall stood Jungkook’s group—rowdy, loud, and brimming with mischief. On the other side, Taehyung’s posse looked equally ready for war, their arms crossed and smirks firmly in place.
“Where is he?” Jungkook muttered, scanning the other side.
As if summoned by sheer spite, Kim Taehyung sauntered into view. He was wearing his usual smug expression, the kind that made Jungkook’s teeth clench involuntarily. Taehyung leaned lazily against the wall, his sharp features catching the sunlight in a way that was infuriatingly photogenic.
“Jeon,” Taehyung called out, his deep voice carrying over the noise. “You’re late. Again. Don’t tell me you’re slacking already?”
“I don’t have time for your games, Kim,” Jungkook shot back, stepping closer. “Why are you here?”
Taehyung’s smirk widened. “Why does it matter? Your friends started this. We’re just here to… respond.”
“Respond?” Jungkook repeated, arching an eyebrow. “By vandalizing the freshmen banner?”
“Who, us?” Taehyung gestured to his group, his tone mock-innocent. “We’d never stoop so low. But maybe your friends just can’t handle a little healthy competition.”
The tension was a hair’s breadth from snapping. Jungkook could feel the weight of his friends’ expectant stares. They wanted him to fight back, to take charge. But all he could see was Taehyung, standing there like he owned the world, daring him to rise to the bait.
Jungkook took a deep breath. “Fine,” he said, stepping up to the wall. “You want to play? Let’s settle this. One-on-one.”
A ripple of surprise passed through the crowd, but Taehyung’s expression didn’t falter. If anything, his eyes gleamed with interest. “One-on-one? You sure you can handle that, Jeon?”
Jungkook ignored the jibe, his jaw set. “Pick your game.”
Taehyung tilted his head, pretending to think. Then, with a slow, deliberate grin, he said, “Basketball. First to ten. Loser buys dinner for everyone.”
Jungkook didn’t blink. “Deal.”
The crowd erupted into cheers and jeers as the makeshift court was quickly set up. Jungkook’s heart was pounding, but he refused to let it show. This wasn’t just a game; it was about pride. About proving, once again, that he wasn’t about to back down from Kim Taehyung.
As the ball was tossed into the air, their eyes locked, and Jungkook knew one thing for sure: this was going to be a long semester.
