The clatter of chopsticks against a bowl echoed in the quiet dining room as Jungkook focused intensely on the book in his left hand. His parents sat across from him, watching in exasperation as their son swirled noodles in his bowl, completely oblivious to how loud it was.

“Jungkook, can you eat and read without making it sound like a construction site?” his father finally said, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Huh?” Jungkook looked up, his round glasses slipping slightly down his nose. He pushed them back up absentmindedly, noodles dangling precariously from his chopsticks. “What? I’m multitasking.”

His mother sighed, shaking her head. “You’re going to choke one day with how you eat, son. And why are you reading during dinner? Can’t it wait?”

“No, it can’t,” Jungkook replied, shoving a mouthful of noodles into his mouth and flipping a page of his book. “My test today went great, but I have another one coming up. I need to stay ahead.”

His father glanced at his wife. “He’s always ahead. Maybe too ahead. Can’t he slow down for once?”

“Slowing down is for people who don’t want to top the class,” Jungkook mumbled through a mouthful of noodles.

“Swallow first!” his mother scolded, her voice stern.

Jungkook obediently gulped down the food, looking sheepish. “Sorry, sorry.”

The room fell silent for a moment, save for the sound of Jungkook’s noodles and the faint flipping of pages.

Then, suddenly, Jungkook cleared his throat, setting down his chopsticks. “By the way,” he began, pushing his glasses up again, “I got a dorm key from the dean today. I’m moving out tomorrow.”

His parents froze mid-bite.

“You’re what?” his mother exclaimed.

“Moving out,” Jungkook repeated casually, taking another bite of his noodles. “The dean offered me a spot in the dorms. Tomorrow’s Sunday, so it’s the perfect day to pack.”

“Why do you need to move out?” his father asked, frowning. “You have everything you need here!”

Jungkook sighed, setting down his bowl. “It’s not about the house. It’s about being closer to the campus. Plus, I’ll have more time to study without the commute. You know how much time I lose on the bus every day?”

“You use that time to sleep,” his mother pointed out.

“Exactly!” Jungkook exclaimed. “Now I can sleep and study properly.”

His father leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms. “You’re sure about this?”

Jungkook nodded. “Yes, Dad. It’s better for my grades, and I’m twenty now. I think it’s time.”

His mother sighed heavily, looking at her son with a mixture of pride and reluctance. “Fine. But you better come home often. And don’t forget to eat real food, not just instant noodles!”

Jungkook smiled, leaning forward to grab another bite. “Deal.”

The rest of the dinner passed in quiet conversation, with Jungkook occasionally muttering medical terms under his breath. His parents exchanged glances, silently accepting that their overachieving, noodle-slurping son was truly growing up—whether they were ready or not.
