Stepping out into the cold evening air, Opal shivered slightly. Damn, it's chilly today. Rubbing her palms together in a futile attempt to generate some warmth, she tucked her hands into the deep pockets of her coat and began her walk home, the sharp bite of the wind making her quicken her pace.

The quiet streets stretched out before her, the lamplight casting long, thin shadows on the pavement. Ten minutes passed in a blur of streetlights and empty sidewalks, and soon the familiar sight of her brother's university campus came into view. As she approached the imposing iron gates, a sudden curiosity tugged at her. She paused and peeked through the bars, her eyes scanning the courtyard.

The campus was eerily quiet at this hour, the towering buildings casting long, jagged shadows across the cobblestone paths. A few stray students lingered near the dormitories, but otherwise, it felt abandoned, like the whole world had emptied out, leaving just the cold and the silence.

A figure caught her attention, cycling down the path. In the dim light, Opal couldn't make out many details, but the way the person moved with such ease and confidence made them seem almost graceful. Tilting her head, she lingered for a moment, her curiosity piqued. Could it be? She wondered if her brother was still around.

It was as though the universe had answered her silent wish. As the cyclist drew closer, Opal gasped, and a mischievous grin curled onto her lips. She waited for the perfect moment, her heart already racing with anticipation. As the bike passed by, she cupped her hands around her mouth and yelled, "Hey, loser!"

The response was immediate and glorious. Her brother let out a startled, high-pitched scream that echoed down the street, a sound so uncharacteristic of him it nearly brought her to tears with laughter. His hands flew off the handlebars, and the bike wobbled dangerously from side to side. He managed to steady himself just in time, one foot slamming onto the ground for balance, his face flushed with a mix of shock and annoyance.

"Opal!" he shouted, shaking his head as he regained his composure. "You so annoying!"

She was still grinning as she leaned against the gates, laughing quietly to herself. It was moments like these that made her forget about the weight of the day.

"What was that for?!" he barked, his eyes narrowing as he glared at her, clearly flustered. "If anyone saw that, I'd be humiliated! You're always ruining my mood!"

Opal, still doubled over in fits of laughter, wiped tears from her eyes as she straightened up. "That's not very nice to say to your sister," she replied, her tone mock-offended, though her grin was still wide.

Her brother rolled his eyes, clearly trying and failing to hide the amusement creeping onto his face. "You're impossible," he muttered, but the hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Yeah, yeah, but you love me," she shot back, her laughter dying down as she casually leaned against the iron gates.

He huffed, rolling his eyes and mimicking her words in a high-pitched tone. "Yeah, yeah, but you love me," he said, his childish retort only fuelling her amusement. Opal shook her head, smiling smugly as she looped her arm through his, leaning close like they were the best of friends.
