It was a dimly lit room, a quiet room except for the faint sounds of the scraping of the wood against the board as Fyodor sat at a table as he played by himself. His fingers moved and manipulated the pieces with strategy. The flicker of the small candles around the room brought some dim light against the darkness.

Nikolai was sitting on top of Fyodor's windowsill as he watched him play with his chess board. He watched carefully analyzing his every move. He had a knife in his hand as it spun around his finger the blade gleaming in the dimly lit room. Nikolai then began to speak as the knife continued to spin.

"You know, Fedya.." he said light and playful. "You're like a cat playing with his toy..no fun and your always controlling the pieces..when will you let them fight each other instead of being only one one side?"

Fyodor continued to manipulate the pieces as he replied not looking at him at all but acknowledging him.

"Chess isn't about two pieces fighting each other for victory..it's all about the control and strategy.."

Nikolai then stopped spinning the knife catching it as he tilted his head "Control huh?" His grin on his face widened a bit more he looked outside the window into the darkness of the sky.

"And what if the pieces ended up moving on their own?"

Fyodor then glanced up at him..his violet eyes staring into his icy blue ones, thinking how stupid that question was. He let out a sigh as he continued to move a black chess piece forward.

"They never do..unless the player knows what they're doing.."

Nikolai then laughed at his statement as he tossed the knife he had in his hand up into the air and caught it. He repeated this several times as he spoke.

"You say that now but we both know that you like it when I have you guessing all the time hm?" his grin was still on his face.

He then caught the knife in his palm and got down from the windowsill walking to Fyodor's side and whispered

"Tell me Fedya. Am I one of your pawns on your chessboard or something more..let's say unpredictable?.."

Fyodor's gaze was sharp but lingered into Nikolai's icy blue eyes

"You're chaos Nikolai..but chaos can be useful in some aspects..at least for now.."

Nikolai laughed again bright and playful as usual

"Oh Fedya you wound me! But I should probably take it as a compliment.." he then spun dramatically before heading to the door out of the room.

Nikolai then took a bow taking his hat off as well before leaving the room.

The door then shut as Nikolai stood across from it, his red gloved hand still on the doorknob. Inside the room Fyodor remained seated with his chess pieces knocking out the last white piece. There was no emotion on his face just the grin of satisfaction on his lips of who just played in a game they already won from the start. Nikolai was standing behind the door not wanting to move. His pulse raced more. His hand shook slightly.

"You'll come back eventually..so go along now.."

Fyodor whispered to the what he thought was an empty hallway. He was never worried he knew the threads in which they connected way too well. They just led back to him.

Nikolai knew the voice from the other side of the door being Fyodors. He knew it..it was cold..

That statement wasn't wrong. It was never a question. Fyodor always knew where he was..he knew everything. That was always his curse and power over Nikolai..how powerful and full of knowledge he was..the coldness Fyodor always had in his voice..it made his heart race..

Eventually he forced himself to move and keep walking before Fyodor thinks something is suspicious which would be worse for him..he didn't even acknowledge the tightening pulse in his chest..

Was it fear?

Was it longing?

Was it love?

He didn't know.

Fyodor knew he never had to chase his pawns..he knew how to wait for them to just come back to him..it's the same everytime ..he knew how to bend any threads to get them to work his way and manipulate them..

just like the pieces on a chessboard...
