Amelia stood at the window of her apartment, staring out at the city below, but her mind was far from the bustling streets. It had been a few days since she had seen Adrian, and even longer since she had received the devastating news about Daniel. The ache in her heart hadn't lessened; if anything, it had deepened. She couldn't escape the emptiness, the crushing weight of her loss. And now, as if fate wasn't done testing her, there was the matter of the pregnancy. She had never expected her life to take such a sudden, unthinkable turn. The idea of carrying Daniel's child should have filled her with joy, but all it did was remind her that the man who had been her rock was now gone, never to see the life they had created together.
She heard the soft knock on her door and froze. Adrian. She knew it was him. She had been avoiding him for days, unsure of how to face him with everything going on in her life. But now, there was no hiding from the truth.
Taking a deep breath, Amelia walked slowly to the door. She opened it to find Adrian standing there, his features soft but worn, as though the past few days had taken their toll on him too. His gaze immediately softened when he saw her.
"Amelia," Adrian's voice was gentle, and it made her heart ache all over again. "How are you holding up?"
She shook her head, her throat tight. "Not well. It's hard, Adrian. It feels like everything is falling apart, and I don't know what to do anymore."
Adrian stepped inside, his eyes never leaving hers. He reached out slowly, as if unsure of whether to comfort her or not. "I'm here, okay? Whatever you need, you don't have to go through this alone."
Amelia looked up at him, her breath catching in her throat. The warmth of his presence was comforting, but it also brought back a flood of memories she wasn't sure she was ready to confront.
She led him to the couch, her hands fidgeting in her lap as she sat down. Adrian took a seat beside her, closer than she expected, but not too close. His eyes searched hers, a quiet understanding in his gaze. He had always been able to read her, to understand her in ways no one else could.
"Adrian, there's something I need to tell you," Amelia began, her voice shaking. She had avoided facing this truth for as long as she could, but now there was no more running from it.
"What is it?" Adrian asked softly, his voice filled with concern.
Amelia took a deep breath, looking down at her hands. "I'm pregnant."
The words hung heavy in the air between them, and for a moment, neither of them moved. Adrian's expression shifted, confusion and surprise crossing his face, followed by a flicker of something deeper. His eyes darkened, his jaw tightening as if trying to process what she had just said.
"You're... pregnant?" he asked slowly, his voice almost a whisper.
Amelia nodded, her hands clutching the edge of the couch. "Yes. I found out a few days ago. I didn't know how to handle it, Adrian. Daniel's gone, and now... now I have to do this alone."
Adrian's gaze softened, and for a moment, there was no trace of the man who had been consumed by jealousy and rage in the past. Instead, there was only concern and a deep, quiet sadness that mirrored her own.
"Amelia, I can't pretend to know what you're going through right now," Adrian said, his voice quiet but firm. "I know how much Daniel meant to you, and I know how much this hurts. But I want you to know... I'm here. I'm here for you, and for the baby."
Her eyes filled with tears at his words. She hadn't expected him to say that, not after everything that had happened between them. He had hurt her, betrayed her trust, and yet now, he was offering something she hadn't dared to hope for—a second chance.
"I don't know if I can trust you, Adrian," Amelia said, her voice trembling. "I don't know if I can open myself up to you again. It feels like everything has been taken from me. First Daniel, now this... I don't even know how to move forward."
Adrian's hand gently covered hers, his touch warm and comforting. "I understand. I don't expect you to just forgive me, or to suddenly forget the past. But I want to be here for you, Amelia. And I want to be there for this baby. Whatever you decide, I'll respect it, but please know that you don't have to face this alone."
The words felt like a lifeline, but Amelia was still unsure. She felt a mixture of emotions—grief, confusion, and the faintest spark of hope. Could she really trust him again? Could she let go of the past and embrace what was coming?
Adrian's voice broke through her thoughts. "Amelia, I'll do whatever it takes to prove to you that I'm not the same man I was before. I'm not perfect, and I can't change the mistakes I made, but I want to be the person you need now."
Tears welled up in Amelia's eyes as she looked at him, her heart torn. She was carrying Daniel's child, and yet here was Adrian, offering a kind of support she didn't know if she deserved.
"I don't know what to do," she whispered. "I feel so lost."
Adrian's hand gently cupped her face, his thumb wiping away a tear that had fallen. "We'll figure it out together, Amelia. One step at a time. I'm not asking you to make any decisions today. Just know that I'm here, and I'll be here for you and for the baby, no matter what."
Amelia looked into Adrian's eyes, and for the first time since Daniel's death, she felt a glimmer of hope. She didn't know where this journey would take her, or what the future held. But in this moment, with Adrian by her side, she felt like she wasn't completely alone.
