The restaurant Adrian had chosen was quiet and intimate, tucked away in a small corner of the city where the noise of everyday life seemed distant. The soft hum of background music and the warm, golden glow of the lamps made it feel like they were in a world of their own.Amelia had to admit, she hadn't expected to feel comfortable at first, but the moment they sat down, something about the atmosphere made her feel at ease. Adrian, ever the gentleman, had suggested the lasagna from the menu, and she couldn't help but laugh at how much he seemed to know her tastes, even after everything that had happened between them. It was a small thing, but it felt oddly reassuring.
She took a deep breath, watching as Adrian carefully sliced into his food, glancing up at her as if waiting for her reaction.
"This place has the best lasagna in the city," he said with a hint of pride in his voice. "You won't regret it."
Amelia smiled faintly, then picked up her fork, taking a tentative bite. The flavors were rich and comforting, just like Adrian's presence. As she chewed, she realized it wasn't just the food she found comforting—it was the familiarity of being around him, the way he made her feel like she wasn't entirely lost.
"This is really good," she said, savoring the bite. "I think you were right."
Adrian grinned, his eyes softening as he looked at her. "I'm glad you like it."
There was a brief silence, and then Adrian placed his fork down, his gaze never leaving hers. "Amelia, I know things have been difficult, and I don't want to push you into anything you're not ready for. But I need you to know... I still care about you. I want to be a part of your life, no matter what happens."
Amelia's heart stilled for a moment. She hadn't expected him to say it out loud, but hearing him speak the words made her realize how much she had been avoiding facing the truth. The truth that somewhere along the way, she had let herself care for him again.
"I care about you too, Adrian," she admitted quietly, her fingers absentmindedly tracing the rim of her glass. "But I'm scared. I don't want to make the same mistakes again. I don't want to hurt you, and I don't want to hurt myself."
Adrian leaned forward slightly, his eyes earnest. "You don't have to have all the answers right now. We're both in this together, one step at a time. And if you need space to figure things out, I'll respect that. But I'm not going anywhere."
Amelia's chest tightened at his words. She didn't know if she could ever completely let go of the past, but in this moment, it didn't feel as important as it once did. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she was allowed to have a future. A future with the baby. A future where she could heal.
"What if I'm not ready?" Amelia asked, the vulnerability in her voice clear. "What if I'm not ready to trust you, or anyone, again?"
Adrian's face softened, his hand resting gently on top of hers. "Then we'll take it slow. I don't need you to rush into anything. I just need you to know that I'm here for you, for whatever you need. Whether that's just friendship or something more."
The warmth of his hand on hers sent a ripple of comfort through her. It had been so long since she had allowed herself to lean on anyone, to allow anyone in. But here, with Adrian, it felt like a safe space, even if it was a fragile one.
Amelia sighed, leaning back in her chair as she stared out at the restaurant's window. She could see the city lights twinkling in the distance, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to imagine a future. Not just a future with the baby, but a future where she could rebuild her life—one where she didn't have to carry the weight of her grief alone.
"I'm not sure what I want yet," she said, her voice steady. "But I'm willing to try. I'm willing to see where this can go."
Adrian's smile was slow but genuine, and it filled her with an unexpected sense of peace. He didn't expect her to have all the answers, and that meant more to her than she had realized.
"I'm glad," he said softly. "And whatever you decide, I'll be here."
As the evening wore on, they shared a few more words, exchanged light-hearted laughter, and even talked about the baby. Adrian was careful, gentle, and patient with every word, and it made Amelia feel as though she wasn't alone in this new journey.
By the time they left the restaurant, the air had grown colder, but Amelia felt a warmth inside her she hadn't felt in months. It wasn't the kind of warmth that meant everything was fixed—it was the kind of warmth that said it was okay to hope, to move forward, and to take small steps toward something better.
Adrian walked her back to her apartment, his hand brushing hers occasionally, each touch a reminder that the past didn't define their future. When they arrived, Amelia paused at her door, turning to face him.
"Thank you for tonight," she said quietly. "For being patient with me. For giving me space to breathe."
Adrian gave her a soft smile. "There's no rush. Take all the time you need. I'm just glad we're doing this."
With a final, lingering glance, Amelia opened the door, feeling a strange sense of peace settle over her as she stepped inside. She wasn't sure where this journey would take her or what would happen next, but for the first time in a long time, she wasn't afraid to take the next step.
And with Adrian still in her life, there was a small but growing part of her that believed she wasn't walking this path alone anymore.
