When Lisa grades began to slip, her teacher assigned her a tutor—Jennie. The announcement was made during class, and Jennie stomach churned with dread as Lisa turned to look at her, one perfectly arched eyebrow raised.
The first session in the library was awkward, to say the least. Lisa arrived late, her presence commanding attention even in the quiet space. She sauntered in, her designer bag slung over her shoulder, and plopped down across from Jennie with a sigh.
"Great," Lisa said sarcastically, eyeing Jennie oversized sweater and the meticulously organized stack of notebooks in front of her. "The library mouse is going to save me."
Jennie tried to ignore the sting of Lisa words and focused on the task at hand. She opened her algebra textbook and began explaining equations, her voice steady despite the tension. But Lisa wasn't paying attention. She tapped her manicured nails on the desk, her eyes wandering around the room.
"You're not even listening," Jennie finally snapped, surprising both herself and Lisa.
Lisa gaze snapped back to Jennie, her lips twitching into a smirk. "Fine. Teach me, then."
By the end of the session, Lisa managed to solve a few problems on her own. She refused to admit she was impressed, but Jennie caught the slight flicker of satisfaction in her eyes. Slowly, they began to find common ground. Lisa surprising love for fantasy novels and Jennie secret admiration for Lisa dancing became the threads that started to connect them.
