The next couple of weeks started to become more intense as the football season was quickly approaching.

I could tell the shift in his mood. Nick was distant, not so much physically, but emotionally he seemed to check out here and there from time to time..

Almost as if a callus was growing over him and protecting him from feeling. I tried not to take this personally, because he made it very clear to me that this was all just part of the process, but some days were harder than others.

—But I don't think anything would prepare us for what was about to come this week.

Nick and I were on the couch when I got a call from an unknown Florida number.

"Hello?" I quickly, answer.

"Hello, am I speaking to Liliana Kinley?" The women's voice was unfamiliar and stern.

"Yes, this is her."

"Miss Kinley, we have your father here Mark Kinley at the Mercy Hospital in Miami. He was involved in a serious car accident."

I jump up frantically. "Wha-What?! Is he ok?!"

Nick watches me closely as he joins me by standing up. His face washed over with concern.

"He is doing better and we have him in stable condition, but he's still in the ICU and has a long road of recovery ahead of him." She says. "He's going to need someone to help him with that recovery and you are the only person who is listed here in his emergency contacts."

"Oh, my god." My body began to shake. "How did this happen?!"

"We suspect a drunk driver hit them head on, but there is still currently an open investigation."

"Them? Someone was in the car with him? Who?" My heart nearly stops beating as I wait for her reply.

"I am unable to release that information. Are you able to come to the hospital and provide us with some information?" She then asks.

I felt a tear slide down my cheek. "Yes, I am out of state, but I can be there by tomorrow."

Nicks eyes widen. "What's going on, Lili?" He questions.

"Okay, that would be great. You're father really needs you here." She then, replies. Her voice softens as she says this.

"I'll be there as soon as I can."

I hang up and completely break down. I rush past Nick and up the stairs to start packing a suitcase. He follows me close behind.

"Liliana, what the hell is going on?!" He questions me as he watches me haphazardly starting to throw clothes out of the dresser and into my suitcase.

But it was like he wasn't even in the same room as me. I almost felt outside of my body and his voice was distant sounding like he was talking underwater.

He grabs me by my arms and gently shakes me. "Lili, talk to me!"

"Mark was in a really bad car accident." I cry. "I need to go back to Florida like, I need to get on the next flight out of here."
