"She knows I'm not Blaine," Jordan reported a few moments later to Brett. He stood tensely in facing his cousin, the leader of the Rebellion, his body language tense and ready for action. His eyes darted around the room, looking for any signs of danger as he spoke. The two cousins stood facing each other in a small, dimly lit room, their conversation shrouded in secrecy.
Brett's face was concerned and determined as he listened to Jordan's report. He knew that their mission to overthrow the Dark King's reign would not be possible without Elizabeth's help. Brett sighed as he pushed his slick black hair out of his face. He could see the weight of Jordan's conscience on his shoulders.
"I haven't had a chance to fill in any of the blanks yet," Jordan continued, his voice low. "But I believe once she settles in, she will be willing to listen and help us in any way she can. What choice does she have?"
Jordan watched as Brett nodded. He knew his cousins' minds were already working on a plan to use this new ally to their advantage. All Brett and Meredith had discussed since Elizabeth arrived was how badly they needed her if they were going to succeed in their rebellion.
If they weren't speaking about Elizabeth, they were questioning the choice of the necklace. She had to have been selected for a reason. She had to be special. Jordan knew more than he was telling them, and had about had enough of their scheming and conspiracy theories. What could he do at this point though? He had no more answers than they had that he was willing to voice. He ran his tongue across his teeth with a sigh.
"Good work, cousin," Brett said, clapping Jordan on the shoulder. "Let's go back to the others and figure out our next move." Then Brett quickly headed towards the door to leave the room, dismissing Jordan with a wave of his hand. As he reached the door, Brett turned to face Jordan.
"Wait," Brett said hastily, "before I go, would you please give her this ring?" He hesitated as he pulled a golden object out of his pocket, a signet ring from family Montgomery. Great.
Jordan took the ring but looked at his cousin with confusion on his face. Brett's mouth quirked to the side.
"Oh, wipe that look off your face, lover boy. The ring allows us to know where she is at all times. We cannot let her out of our sight, and we cannot risk his royal pain in the ass knowing she is alive and whisking her away. She is here for our gain...not his happiness."
Jordan grabbed the ring just to humor the bastard. He was unsure if Beth would even accept the ring after what happened with the necklace but what his cousin said did make sense. Once King Contello discovered that they housed a very pretty, very exotic-looking women—yeah, Jordan didn't want to think of that at the moment...
Since the Dark King's wife died, he had no problem claiming anyone he thought worthy of a second glance. If he didn't want them, he would just pass them off to the Prince in hopes his son would finally marry. Either situation would end badly for someone like Beth. She had such a tender heart.
Jordan then followed Brett out of the dark room into the brightly lit hallway lined with portraits of the members of the Montgomery family. Brett headed towards the kitchen, where Meredith was helping Mason cook dinner, as Jordan headed back towards the guest wing where Beth was waiting.
As Jordan passed a set of guards, he gave a quick nod in greeting and continued walking down the halls of Castle Montgomery. Jordan managed to avoid everybody else on patrol. Which was a miracle in itself. He just wanted to get back to Beth. He had a lot to do in very little time, starting with earning her trust back.
As Jordan turned the corner to the hall that led towards the room he left Beth in he saw the silhouette of a familiar shape rounding the far corner ahead of him. He felt his breath hitch. Silver hair followed the form as she quietly moved back towards her room, he should have realized he was being followed. Duran, he should have locked that damn door behind him.
