When I was younger, I would sometimes ask my dad the question of "If you die, who will we stay with?". It was always hypothetical, of course. No kid expects them to be the ones to have their family die. It just seemed like something from the movies, but you'll have an ordinary life.
When I was first told my dad and sister were both in a fatal car accident, I could hardly believe it. It felt like a lie. This wasn't how my life was supposed to go, right?
I stayed at my friend's house until the funeral. Seeing my family being buried felt like the universe called me every single slur and ruined my life. I wish I was getting buried with them
So now, who am I staying with?
"Did you finish packing all of your stuff, kiddo?"
My uncle, Taemin, asks as he sits in the driver's seat of his truck.
"Yeah, I think so." I reply, lacking enthusiasm.
"How 'bout you go back upstairs and check, just in case."
I sigh, leave my stuff at the truck, and run back into the house. My heart aches as I walk through my once warm, alive house, to now an empty one. I go to my room, everything is gone. I decide to go into my sister's room. I find her old journal and some photos of she and her friends, I take those.
I go into my dad's room and sit on his bed as I look around the room. I grab some framed family photos and a couple of other things of sentimental value, before seeing a strange box in the closet.
What is that..?
I pull out the box, and it was covered with dust. It's just a regular cardboard box, really. It just says "Parent's house".
"Y/n! We gotta leave!"
My uncle calls out to me, so I decide to just grab the box and run to the car without a single glance at its contents.
The drive to my uncle's house took 5 hours. The car ride was mostly him singing along to some country songs on the radio, and I now know to never do karaoke with him.
My uncle lives in this foresty area, kind of in the middle of nowhere. I've never even heard of the town. Not only does he live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, but his neighborhood is even more isolated from the rest of the town.
After the five-hour-long drive, we finally made it to his home. Most of the car ride was just trees. Trees after more trees after more trees. At least we get some good air?
Uncle Taemin's house is pretty big. Not like a mansion, but more like a very large, old, janky-looking house. You can tell how old it is by just seeing the different paint jobs, evidence of them giving up on repainting multiple times.
I'm not entirely sure who my uncle lives with. I know he doesn't live alone, that's for sure.
My uncle helps me with the luggage as we walk up the front porch stairs, and suddenly my foot breaks a hole into a step, waking me up from my tired mood.
"Ahh!"
Taemin stops and helps me get my foot out.
"Be careful, 'specially in the house too." He warns nonchalantly.
