Life requires decision-making.

When we get stuck in endless loops of questions, doubts, and "what ifs," we call it "overthinking."

You may wonder if overthinking is a curse, but that's not the case entirely. We humans have the ability "to think." It shapes us and defines our existence apart from other species.Society labels overthinking as a flaw, but the truth is far more enigmatic.

Blessing side of overthinking.

Fuel for creativityThe ability to hit multiple perspectives sparks innovative ideas and ignites creativity. From inventing the wheel to AI, we spark creativity to make life better and more meaningful.Problem-solvingIf well-structured, overthinking can identify the problem, prepare contingency, and solve the problem. This can help advance humanity.Deep thinking gives us a better understanding of how things work and what we can change.Emotional IntelligenceBy understanding our and others' emotions, we can build better human connection and integrity. In some cases, not getting too emotional and being practical can save us from bad situations.

Curse side of overthinking

Analysis loopOverthinking "what ifs" and "should-haves" makes us anxious and confused.People get stuck in their shells. In their little world of analysis, where everything looks like "utter confusion."Fear of FailureWe imagine the outcome in our mind before it happens, and that inflames fear and anxiety of failure.Hence, Seneca said — "We suffer more in imagination than in reality."Broken relationshipsEndless conflict and recreating scenarios in our minds shatter our understanding of relationships.People can't forgive their own or others' mistakes. This breaks relationships and leads to loneliness.Mental ExhaustionA constant buzz in our mind exhausts us. It demolishes our productivity and well-being.Overthinking may lead to mental disorders and can affect brain functioning.

The Verdict

Is overthinking a blessing or a curse?

It's both — and neither. It's a tool, and like any tool, its value depends on how we use it.When used cautiously, overthinking can illuminate great ideas, innovations, and creativity at the highest levels. But if used improperly, it may lead to unreal downfall, stagnation, and a path of doom.

So, the next time you find yourself overthinking, pause.

Ask yourself: Am I thinking of enhancing my decisions or am I letting it control me?

With a little awareness, you can turn overthinking from a liability into your greatest asset.
