the early morning light filtered through the curtains as billie stirred in bed. she glanced at you, still sound asleep, your face relaxed and peaceful. she hated leaving you, especially when you weren't feeling your best. you'd mentioned a scratchy throat and a headache the night before, but you'd waved it off, insisting it was nothing.

billie leaned over, pressing a soft kiss to your temple before carefully slipping out of bed. she tiptoed around the room, getting dressed as quietly as possible. as she grabbed her bag, she looked back at you one last time, her heart squeezing in her chest.

"love you," she whispered, even though you couldn't hear her. then, she left, pulling the door shut gently behind her.

the day dragged on for you. from the moment you woke up, you knew you weren't just "a little off." your head throbbed, your throat ached, and your entire body felt heavy. the house was too quiet without billie, and the absence of her warmth only seemed to amplify how miserable you felt.

you tried to drink tea and distract yourself with a book, but nothing helped. what you really wanted was billie—her presence, her soothing voice, the way she'd hold you close and make you feel like everything would be okay. but she was busy, and you didn't want to bother her.

by the evening, you were curled up on the couch, wrapped in a blanket and wearing one of billie's oversized hoodies. it smelled like her—her shampoo, her perfume, her unique scent that was so comforting to you. it wasn't the same as having her there, but it was something. you skipped dinner, your stomach too queasy to handle food, and eventually drifted into a restless sleep.

it was nearly midnight when billie finally got home, exhausted but relieved to be back. she dropped her bag by the door and kicked off her shoes, letting out a sigh of relief. the house was dark except for the dim glow of the tv, and as she walked into the living room, she saw you curled up on the couch.

her heart softened at the sight of you, her hoodie practically swallowing you whole as you slept. she walked over quietly, kneeling beside you. you looked so small, so vulnerable, and when she brushed a strand of hair from your face, she froze.

you were burning up.

"oh, baby," she murmured, her brow furrowing with concern. she gently shook your shoulder. "y/n? sweetheart, wake up."

you stirred, your eyes fluttering open, unfocused and heavy with sleep. "billie?" you rasped, your voice hoarse.

"yeah, it's me," she said softly. "you're burning up. why didn't you call me?"

"didn't want to bother you," you mumbled, barely able to keep your eyes open.

billie sighed, pressing a kiss to your forehead before helping you sit up. "you could never bother me. come on, let's get you something for that fever."

she helped you take some medicine and then guided you upstairs to your bedroom. you leaned on her heavily, too tired to do much on your own. when you finally settled into bed, billie noticed you were still wearing her hoodie.

"you're wearing my hoodie," she said, her voice soft with a hint of amusement.

you nodded sleepily. "smells like you. makes me feel better."

her heart melted at your words, and she leaned down to kiss your forehead again, her lips lingering. "you're too cute for your own good, you know that?"

you hummed in response, already half-asleep.

billie tucked you in, brushing her fingers through your hair. "you should have called me," she whispered. "i would've come home in a heartbeat. i'm taking tomorrow off, okay? i'll stay with you all day."

"you don't have to," you murmured, but she shushed you gently.

"of course i do. you're my priority," she said firmly.

as you drifted off, billie slid into bed beside you, wrapping her arms around you carefully. she held you close, her hand resting on your forehead to check your temperature every now and then.

"goodnight, my love," she whispered, pressing one last kiss to your temple.

and for the first time all day, you felt truly at peace.
