The creature charged like a freight train, its claws scraping against the forest floor with a screech that could shatter glass. My first instinct was to freeze, but then I remembered I wasn't exactly in the mood to die today, so I grabbed my sword and got ready to make this thing regret its life choices, I mean, I wuold probably end up regretting mines, but trying doesn't hurt.
Noah didn't wait for me. The moment the beast lunged, he shot an arrow, but the thing was already moving, fast as lightning. The arrow missed by a hair, embedding itself in a tree with a satisfying thud.
"Well, that's a first," Noah muttered in a slightly annoyed tone, he hate it when he misses the target, already nocking another arrow. The beast didn't even seem to notice. It just kept coming, its glowing eyes fixed on us like we were appetizers at an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Karl, ever the overachiever, took a deep breath and raised his wand like he was casting a spell like Harry Potter against dementors, one more second and we wuold have seen his expecto patronum. "If I hit somone, it's not my fault" he said before trying to throw a spell at it. The creature dodged with more grace than should be allowed, the spell shooting harmlessly past it hitting a tree and making it burn, smart move really, we're in a forest, luckily it didn't spred, otherwise I wuold have throw him in the fire.
"Seriously?" Karl groaned, lowering his wand. "It's too fast!"
Sophie, who had been eerily silent up until now, slammed her hand into the ground. The earth rumbled beneath us, and thick vines shot up, wrapping around the beast's legs. There. Now we had it. Except, nope. The thing wasn't done. It ripped through the vines like they were made of wet tissue paper, sending bits of plant flying everywhere.
"My gods, just die already!" Sky said in a annoying tone while attacking it from above.
"Well, what are we supposed to do? Stand around and look pretty?" I shot back, gripping on my sword while trying to see if anyone had a plan, but ,of course, none did. "Let's just kill it before it gets any more ideas."
Noah released another arrow, this time aiming for the beast's glowing, sinister eyes. It hit. And... the thing didn't flinch. The arrow was absorbed into its fur like it was made of air.
"No. I'm done, it absorbed my arrow!" Noah muttered. He was already getting another arrow ready, but it didn't look promising.
I rolled my eyes, but there was no time to complain. "throw another arrow before I throw myself on that thing 'cause I'm about to get real personal with this shit."
From above, Sky swooped down with the grace of an overgrown pigeon, the wings in his shoes disappearing. "Well, I hate to break it to you, Lex, but I think we're far from done with this lil puppy."
"Awesome," I muttered. "That's just what I needed to hear, always bringing the mood up."
"So," Sophie piped up, looking almost bored despite the chaos. "Can you move your ass already and kill it? I want to leave the creepy forest."
"Yeah, yeah I always have to do the difficult thing huh" I said, twirling my sword in my hand. It was too late to back down now, and frankly, I was getting tired of waiting for this thing to make the first move. "Everyone, get ready. Let's make sure we really piss it off."
The creature lunged again. This time, I was ready. My sword flashed, cutting through the air as I stepped into its path. The thing was faster than any beast I'd faced, but it wasn't fast enough to dodge my blade. I slashed at its side, feeling the blade make contact-finally. The beast screeched, a horrendous, screeching sound that rattled my teeth, but it didn't stop. It didn't even slow down. Instead, it shifted, like a shadow taking shape, getting even more monstrous.
"Fucking finally," I said, wiping the blood off my sword. "Just die already."
The beast growled, slowly disappearing into the shadows. another monster down.
"Yeah, that wasn't disturbing at all," I said dryly, feeling the heat from my dad's bracelet grow warmer again like it was calming down.
"least leave, now." Sophie siad, none argued.
"Well, that was not how I planned to spend my Tuesday," Karl remarked, while tying his hair back up with his wand.
We started walking out of the forest, Sky flying around talking about all the things that come in his head even if they didn't make sense. I was zoomed out while walking. I have no idea how i didn't hit a tree, I mean, I did know how I wasn't hitting them.
"My gods Sky, stop yapping for the love of Zeus." Karl said annoyed like always. it's rare to see him not angry at the world. "What's up your ass today?" Sky answerd while flying around him to annoy him more. Thing that I wuold not do, Karl's can be his mother son when he wants. I know by experience. He turned me into a frog once. Never again.
While Karl and Sky argued, I kept being zoomed out walking next to Sophie, who was the main reason why I wasn't given a tree a kiss with my forehead.
"Left" Sophie said while pushing me away from the tree, she know I dont like others hand on me, so the pushing was rather quick, and snapped me out from being zoomed out.
"thanks" I said as I smile at her, she doesn't smile back, she never do, I would be worried if she did. "So, where are we having dinner when we get out of this forest?"
"Some fast food we find on the way?" Noah asked as he moved from next to Karl, to next to me.
Everyone was fine with the idea, I mean we didn't had many options, we're broke teens surviving in the street while running from monsters, not many choices.
phie crossed her arms, looking around with her usual cold detachment. "Lest hurry out of here."
I agreed,, something was off about that forest, I love forest, but that forest had something strange. The shadows weren't just part of the forest. They were watching us. And that, I didn't like at all.
"Let's go eat and find out whatever the next monstrosity is and deal with it. And hey, no pressure-just don't die." I said as I fix my hairclip back on my hair.
Karl groaned. "Thanks for the pep talk, Lex. Really needed that."
"Anytime," I said with a smirk, looking around, we finally were out of the forest, and back under the night sky on our why to McDonald's.
