The 2023 season drew to a close under the brilliant lights of Abu Dhabi. For Masachika Kuze, the Yas Marina Circuit held a bittersweet weight. It was the scene of his greatest triumph—a maiden World Drivers' Championship in 2021—and now, two years later, it marked the end of a grueling, disheartening season with Aston Martin.
The stakes for the team were small compared to the titanic battle for the Constructors' Championship between McLaren and Red Bull. Aston Martin's fight was humbler, scrapping with Alfa Romeo for ninth in the standings. Equal on points, every position on track would count.
Qualifying: A Familiar Struggle
Qualifying was a nightmare. Despite the team's best efforts, Aston Martin's car simply didn't have the pace. Masachika wrestled with the oversteer and understeer that had plagued them all season, managing only 15th on the grid. Vettel fared worse, lining up 19th. Alfa Romeo wasn't much better—Zhou qualified 17th, and Bottas slotted in 18th.
Returning to the garage after Q2, Masachika stripped off his helmet and gloves, frustration etched into his face. Before he could retreat to his motorhome, he was approached by two familiar figures—Zak Brown and Lando Norris.
"Masachika," Zak said with a warm smile, extending his hand. "I wanted to catch you before the race tomorrow. Just wanted to say—give it everything you've got. This is the last one with Aston, but next year, we're starting fresh."
Lando chimed in, grinning. "We've got a good car, mate. Just wait. It'll feel like a completely different world."
Masachika shook Zak's hand, the weight of their words settling over him. "Thanks, Zak. I'll give it my all. One last push."
Race Day: The Battle for Points
The lights went out, and chaos erupted on the opening lap. McLaren and Red Bull surged ahead, locked in their own intense battle for the championship. But in the midfield, Masachika focused on a different fight—keeping Alfa Romeo behind.
The race was grueling, with tension thick in the air. Masachika spent most of his time battling Bottas for 10th place, their cars trading places as strategies unfolded. By Lap 40, the fight was razor-thin, with Vettel just behind in 12th and Zhou further back in 15th.
"Push harder, Masachika," his engineer urged over the radio. "We need that point."
Masachika gritted his teeth, taking the corners as aggressively as the unpredictable car would allow. Bottas, no stranger to hard racing, defended fiercely, leaving Masachika searching for gaps that barely existed.
On Lap 53, the breakthrough came. Masachika got a better exit out of Turn 7 and activated his DRS, pulling alongside Bottas down the back straight. As they approached the chicane, Masachika braked later, squeezing past the Alfa Romeo on the inside.
"Great move, Masachika! You're in P10," his engineer shouted.
"I know," Masachika replied breathlessly, keeping his focus. "Just let me finish this."
The final laps were nerve-wracking. Bottas kept the pressure on, while Vettel provided a buffer by holding off Zhou in 12th. Up front, McLaren edged out Red Bull for the Constructors' Championship, but Masachika barely noticed. All he cared about was holding his ground.
Crossing the Line
As the checkered flag waved, Masachika crossed the line in 10th, securing the single point Aston Martin needed to edge Alfa Romeo in the standings. Vettel came home in 12th, with Zhou finishing 14th and Bottas just outside the points in 11th.
Masachika slumped back in his seat, exhaling deeply. "P10. That's all we needed, right?" he asked over the radio.
"Confirmed, Masachika. We've got ninth in the Constructors'," his engineer replied.
The End of an Era
Back in the paddock, Masachika removed his helmet, his hair matted with sweat. He spotted Vettel walking toward him, and the two shared a knowing look.
"Well, that's that," Vettel said, holding out his hand.
Masachika shook it firmly. "You gave it everything, Seb. I'll miss racing alongside you."
Vettel smiled faintly. "And I'll miss this circus. But you've got a bright future ahead, Masachika. McLaren's a good team. Make it count."
As Masachika watched Vettel walk away for the last time, he felt a strange mixture of relief and anticipation. His chapter with Aston Martin had come to a close, but the promise of something better lay ahead.
For now, though, he let himself savor the moment. It wasn't a win, but it was enough.
