The university felt completely different at night. The sprawling campus, usually bustling with life and noise, was unnervingly quiet.
I was done collecting all my belongings this morning but returning at night, not the most ideal situation.
The lampposts cast long, eerie shadows across the pathways as Raven led Cerise and me up the back steps of the administrative building.
I clutched my jacket tighter around myself, glancing over my shoulder for the hundredth time. "This is insane," I whispered. "I can't believe we're actually doing this."
"You're welcome," Raven said, her smirk practically glowing in the moonlight. She was completely in her element, clearly loving every second of this.
Cerise, on the other hand, looked completely focused. Her tiny flashlight flicked over the edges of the door as she inspected the lock.
She didn't say much—she was all business, which I appreciated, given the absurdity of the situation.
The truth was, I hadn't wanted to come. Carolina had offered to stay behind with Luka, who was holed up at his apartment doing what he called "real detective work."
And honestly, it sounded better than breaking and entering. But Raven insisted this was the only way we'd get any real answers, and somehow, I got dragged along.
Now here I was, standing in the shadows of the Head Office, watching Cerise work her magic on the lock. "You really think this is going to work?" I whispered.
"Of course," Raven said confidently. "This is nothing. My brother used to do this all the time—don't ask why."
That explained the ID card she had flashed to the guards at the door earlier.
They'd looked skeptical, but one subtle, low-key threat about her dad's connections had been enough to make them back off.
Raven was good at that—getting her way without really trying. I, on the other hand, was much better at worrying.
Earlier, I'd tried to convince them we didn't need to break into the admin building.
I mean, Luka was already looking into the car license plates, and Cerise could probably hack into any database from the comfort of her gaming setup.
But no—Raven had declared this an adventure, and apparently, we were all along for the ride.
Luka and Carolina had stayed behind at Luka's place, keeping an eye on Cerise's vlogs for anything suspicious.
Bianca had come along at first, but Raven kicked her out when she wouldn't stop recording everything for her followers.
"Ooh, this is gonna be so good for the vlog. 'Exposing a stalker in real time.' My followers are gonna eat this up." She had exclaimed exciting.
But Raven was absolutely not having it. So now it was just the three of us.
Cerise gave a satisfied grunt as the lock finally clicked open. "Got it," she said, pushing the door open slowly.
The darkness inside felt like it was waiting for us, swallowing up the light from Cerise's flashlight.
Raven stepped in first, her confidence unwavering. "See? Piece of cake."
I hesitated on the threshold, my stomach twisting. This was a bad idea. I knew it was a bad idea... however something about it was also oddly exciting.
But I followed them anyway, sticking close to Cerise as we made our way down the dim hallway.
