oscar and nalani were sat in the van while the pogues pawned the gold, just to be there to start the van incase anything went south. they were getting tired of being lookouts and sitting in the twinkie all the time.

oscar fiddled with his laces, "y'know how scientists say that you spend like seventy-five percent of your life asleep?"

"pretty sure it's thirty," nalani nodded, rolling her eyes back in her head to think, "but yeah."

"i think i spend the other twenty five being a lookout." he groaned, slumping back against the passenger seat of the car.

nalani giggled, "again, it's thirty. but whatever."

the five teens walk out of the pawn shop, jj still holding the big lump of gold in his hand. nalani furrows her eyebrows as she moved into the back of the twinkie, "i thought you were pawning it?"

"gotta go to resurrection drive." jj says as he swung open the back door, climbing into the van.

oscar scoffs, "that's not a real place. i've never heard of that, ever."

they began to drive to this place, which none of them had ever heard of before, to get the money for the gold. nalani was pretty sure they were driven to the forest part of the cut where there was nothing but weeds and abandoned houses that her and oscar used to explore when they were younger.

they knew all the streets around here and what houses were occupied, vacation houses and what not. her and oscar also knew there was no such thing as resurrection drive, unless a new road had sprouted in the last year and a half.

police sirens sounded behind them, causing them all to turn their heads to look at the car. it was an undercover police car since there was no print on the side of it. that was strange because they didn't have many undercover police in outerbanks.

jj started to panic, trying to stash his backpack in the storage space beneath him. in the midst of their panic, barry - rafe's drug dealer, - had walked up to the car with a shotgun and pointed it directly at john b's head.

"why don't i just go and see those hands up in the air right now?" he said, his voice muffled by the mask that nalani was pretty sure was rafe's. "all of y'all's hands up in the air, right now!" he yelled, causing a chain reaction of them all throwing their hands up into the air.

rafe was high a lot, nalani was confident in knowing he must've been one of barry's top customers. he hung out at his house like all the time and spent all his money there, so he must've been giving barry a lot of money.

if rafe knew that barry had threatened to shoot nalani right in front of her, he would never talk to him again. it was her responsibility to get them out of this mess.

"you outta the car, let's go!" barry commanded john b, which he did on instinct. "let them out!"

john b slid the door open for them and they all came out one by one, nalani and oscar going last. nalani locked her eyes onto barry's, trying not to show him how scared she was. it was then that she realised what he was going for. he wanted the gold that they had, so he didn't care how much money rafe was giving him. it was probably nothing in comparison to how much the gold cost.

he ordered all of them to lay down in the ditch by the side of the road on their stomachs, with their hands pressed out in front of them.
