You and Allister made your way cautiously through the tunnels, the memory of your last visit to the secret arcade flickering in your mind. The strange encounter with Touie the rat still lingered—it was odd how he flirted with you and then disappeared just as quickly. The arcade itself had an eerie energy, and stepping back into it now sent a shiver down your spine.
As you entered, the faint glow of broken screens cast dancing shadows on the walls. That’s when you heard it—a faint, heart-wrenching sob. The sound froze you in place. It wasn’t just any cry; it was Simon’s voice, raw and full of despair.
“Allister, do you hear that?” you whispered, clutching his hand.
He nodded, his glowing eyes narrowing. “Yeah… it’s him. Let’s go.”
Following the sound, you wove between the rows of decrepit machines until you found him. Behind an old arcade console sat Simon, but not as you knew him. He wasn’t in his towering, experimental body—he was in his small plush form. His bright, tear-streaked eyes looked up at you, his tiny frame trembling.
“Please… go away,” Simon whimpered, his voice breaking. “I’m useless.”
Your heart clenched at the sight. Without hesitation, you knelt down and gently scooped him up, cradling his fragile body against your chest. “It’s okay, Simon,” you whispered, holding him tightly. “You’re going to be alright, big guy. I promise.”
Allister knelt beside you, his gaze softening as he reached out and kissed Simon gently on the top of his plush head. “This is… strange,” Allister said, holding Simon’s tiny hands. “How did you lose your bigger body?”
Simon sniffled, his voice muffled against your neck. “I… I was walking outside the castle,” he said, his tears soaking into your shirt. “I found something—like a secret room. It looked so strange. And then… then my bigger body started to melt away. I couldn’t stop it. I got stuck like this.”
He broke into fresh sobs, clutching at you for comfort. Allister’s tail swished with concern as he exchanged a look with you.
“Hey, listen,” you said softly, tilting Simon’s head so his watery eyes met yours. “We’ll figure this out, okay? You’re not useless, Simon. You’re still you, no matter what form you’re in. Let’s go back to the castle and rest. We’ll deal with this tomorrow.”
Simon sniffled again, nodding hesitantly. “O-Okay…”
Allister placed a comforting hand on Simon’s small shoulder before standing. “Let’s get out of here,” he said, his protective demeanor kicking in.
The three of you made your way back through the tunnels, with Simon nestled against your chest. The cold air seemed less oppressive now, replaced by a sense of determination to help him.
When you finally returned to the castle, exhaustion weighed heavily on all of you. In the bedroom, you climbed into bed with Allister, Simon’s plush form tucked safely between you. He was so soft and light that you could hold him as tightly as you wanted without fear of hurting him. His tiny arms wrapped around your neck, and his breathing slowed as he finally relaxed.
Allister wrapped his arms around the both of you, his tail curling protectively over your legs. “Goodnight,” he murmured, his voice warm and soothing.
You smiled, feeling Simon snuggle closer. The weight of the day melted away as you let their presence surround you. Slowly, your eyes drifted shut, and the steady rhythm of Simon and Allister’s breathing lulled you into sleep. For now, everything felt right, and you knew you’d face whatever challenges tomorrow brought together.
