Chapter 1
Looking Through The Bars
June 1986
"Willy, what is going on why are we here? Why would I be arrested and taken to jail. Why me?" I said this; Disbelief resonated in my voice. "Annie, just shut the fuck up! The FBI agents are probably listening, just waiting for you to get pissed off and start saying things that will incriminate me. Willy, I don't care if they are listening, we are here because of something you have done. Not me! Annie, we can't talk here. Willy this is big. The FBI, Special Prosecutors, out of town police officers, undercover agents and a Nark, They all came together to arrest you, and me too."
"Willy listen! Brooks, Penelope and I had just sat down for dinner when I saw something outside the kitchen window. When I pulled back the curtains, I couldn't believe my eyes, there were several black sedans, two sheriff cars and several men in black suits running around to the back of the house. Before I could close the curtains I heard a loud knock on the front door. When I opened the door I was staring into the face of a girl I went to school with dressed in a sheriff's uniform, fully outfitted with a gun and Billy club. "How do you think I felt Willy?"
Before Willy could reply I went on...
"Let me guess, all you can think about is yourself. You haven't even asked about Brooks and Penelope. But that doesn't surprise me. In case your wondering, I called my parents and they came and picked up the kids."
As I was rambling on I did stop and wonder why my parents were so nice when they picked up the kids. My mom gave the men in suits and the sheriff deputies looks to kill, then she yelled at them, " How dare you arrest my daughter.""
My father didn't seem upset with me, He asked the deputies to see the warrant and hugged me. I couldn't believe it! Dad and I rubbed each other the wrong way. He was never on my side. Dad didn't ask me why I thought they were arresting me. Instead he took Brooks hand in his and they went to his bedroom to get some of Brooks things. Mom picked Penelope up and snuggled her.
It was easier if the kids didn't see me cuffed and put into the back of a police car. My parents both knew I wasn't guilty of any wrongdoing. For that I was thankful. It made me feel good, both my parents were confident in my character, whether I was married to Willy or not they knew I wasn't anything like him.
We had long periods of silence while we where in jail, I needed time to think in between arguing with Willy. I couldn't trust him to tell me the truth, so I had to think and figure out how far back this cocaine deal went with Willy. The first time I remember seeing Willy and Benny with cocaine was almost a year ago. Why are the FEDS just now arresting him and me too?
"What have you done? This is crazy Willy, even for you. Catty has been acting really strange lately. Are Dill and Catty involved too? If they are then I can already imagine what you have been up too. You didn't quit, did you Willy? After you promised, you went right ahead and continued to deal cocaine. I don't get it Willy, You never think."
Hopefully Catty wasn't involved, I didn't want something bad to happen to my childhood friend. Willy ignored my comment about Catty. He was too worried about himself to think of anything else at the moment.
"You are digging my grave Annie. Then tell me what is going on Willy. If you have any feelings for me at all you will keep your mouth shut, replied Willy."
"You always think you are so bad and dealing makes you look so cool. Everyone will like and admire Willy Badass Bates because he can hook you up with drugs. Just shut the fuck up Annie. I don't want to go to jail! Wake up Willy, You are in jail!"
