"Okay Jonah, we're at Martin Cass. Looks like your mom is waiting for you." I nod at Issac and wait for the car to come to a stop. Elijah's dad picked him up from Friar's after we talked over exotic milkshakes. Issac assured me over and over that Martin Cass was not as bad as it seems. He even made sure to point out the variety of people and many classes, like I need to know just how big it is. I know Issac just trying to help and he was excited one of his best buds was finally going to attend the same school with him. Of course he still had friends, many of them, at Martin Cass he just didn't hang out with them other than at school much.
Once I felt the car slightly jerk to a stop, I unbuckled and got out the car. I could hear the light clicking of heels that belong to my mother as she headed over to meet me. "Thank you Issac for bringing Jonah over here," my mom said as she put her warm hand on my bicep. Whenever I was in places I'm not familiar with she put her hand on my bicep to steer me the way we're going. I used to use one of those blind sticks but let me tell you, it only made it more difficult for me.
"No problem Mrs. Dawson. I can give Jonah a lift to school if you want." Issac had already told me since we will being going to the same school he would be able to take me and to be honest, I'd rather have him take me than my mom. I'm almost 18 and getting a ride with your mom made me feel like a kid still in Pre-K.
"Okay, well come on Jonah. We need to get in there to meet with the principle and your mentor." I nod and say bye to Issac before following my mom into the school. Immediately after stepping into the school, a wave of warm air meets my face and the echo from the door closing rings through the empty school halls. My mom leads me to, what I think is the office, where I hear the typing on a keyboard. "Excuse me, I'm Leila Dawson and this is my son Jonah, we're here for a meeting with Principle Fairmen and Ms. Wilson."
"Ah yes, right this way," a slightly hoarse voice says. I'm assuming that is the secretary and she seems to be an old one. Poor woman having to deal with troubling teens. We walk into a smaller room, I can tell by the amount of echo. Two voices are talking, one a younger female and one belonged to an older man. "Dr. Fairmen, this is Mrs. Dawson and her son Jonah."
"Oh great, I was discussing with Ms. Wilson your great academic records Jonah. Please have a seat, both of you." I nod and give a slight smile towards Dr. Fairmen's voice before sitting down in a stiff leather seat. "So Jonah, we understand that you are blind, but I want you to know that your experience here at Martin Cass should be just as easy as your years at St. Dennis. We're under the impression that you do know how to read Braille, so we've ordered all your textbooks in Braille. Teachers are going to be given instructions to give your assignments in audio or if needed Ms. Wilson will help read the assignments to you. Any questions?" I shake my head. I know Braille like it's my first language so I'm sure reading the textbooks won't be a problem.
"How exactly do I get to my classes?" The thought of walking through a hall filled with students makes me cringe. I know it will just end up with me shoved around like a hockey puck. air
"Oh right! Yes, Ms. Wilson here is your mentor. She will be taking you to each class assisting you. Your last period will be with her to do any assignments you need help with. She will also be driving you home every evening." I just nod and brush my fingers through my hair. I guess it wasn't such a bad plan, but the thought still made me uneasy.
"Jonah, I will be by your side the whole time. Eventually you will have friends and when that time comes, you can rely on your friends to take you to your classes. Until then I'll help you." I can tell the voice belonged to Ms. Wilson by the young sweet tone. I smile and nod before mom grabs my bicep and tugs me to stand.
"Well I appreciate all your efforts Dr. Fairmen and Ms. Wilson. It's so nice to let Jonah attend here for his senior year. We'll get out of your hair now. I'll have Jonah here early Monday for his schedule." I follow my mom out of the school after giving a goodbye to the two.
Well, I guess it's official. My first day at a public school starts Monday, great.
