ADAM IS SHAKING, his entire body is bloody and bruised. Juliette attempts to take care of his wounds, but it's to little use.
Kenji is sitting in the drivers' seat, me next to him in the passenger's seat.
I glance over to Kenji, "Does this thing have a heater?"
"It's on, but it's crappy. It's not working very well."
I hear Adam groan behind us. "How much longer till we get there?" Juliette asks, her voice breaking a bit.
"Not too much."
"Have you seen anyone who might be following us?"
"No." Kenji pauses. "It's weird. I don't know why no one has noticed a car flying trough these streets after curfew. Something is not right."
"I know."
I sigh. What is Aaron planning?
Adam groans in the back and Juliette's focus turns on only him, her eyes scanning every inch of him. And I can't help but feel a bit jealous. It's not her I envy, not even their love for one another - it's the bond they share, the intimacy of understanding.
Perhaps I did not want to be loved so much as to be understood.
"I'm okay..." Adam mumbles to Juliette.
"Why didn't you tell me you two were together?" Kenji asks unexpectedly. His voice even, neutral.
"What?" Juliette blushes.
Kenji sighs, his gaze landing on me for a second before speaking again. "I'd have to be blind to miss something like that. I mean, shit, just the way he looks at you. It's like the guy never has seen a woman in his life. Like, putting food in front of a starving man and telling him he can't eat it."
Adam's eyes fly open, and Kenji looks at me again after speaking.
"Why didn't you just tell me?" Kenji asks again, moving his gaze to the road ahead of us.
"I never had the chance to ask," Adam answers. His voice less than a whisper. His energy levels are dropping, and fast.
"Wait, are you talking to me or to her?" Kenji glances through the mirror to them.
"We can discuss this later—"
Adam cuts Juliette off. "I told James without asking you. I made an ... assumption." He stops. "I shouldn't have. You should have your choice. And it's your choice if you want to be with me."
