I woke up.
I never felt so.... Awake.

I went downstairs to find Mrs Washington in the kitchen, cooking.
I didn't know what but it smelled amazing.

Mr Washington was sat at the dining table with a tall boy with curly black hair, laughing.

"Alexander!" Called Mr Washington, "Meet your new brother, Lafayette!"

"Bonjour mon ami! I'm Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier Marquis de Lafayette, tho you may call me Lafayette. You must be Alexander." Announced the boy.

"Bonjour, ravi de vous rencontrer Lafayette."

"You speak French?" Lafayette asked, seeming surprised.

I nodded. I learnt French back in Nevis. I was always quite proud of being bilingual.

"Martha is just cooking some pancakes and after we've eaten we're going to the local high school and try to sign you up," explained Mr Washington, "Lafayette already goes there so you won't have to go alone"

I nodded. I didn't want to cause any trouble. They all probably secretly hate me anyway. I'm probably just there on display so they can brag to all of their friends about how they adopted a traumatised poor boy from the Caribbean. Yeah. I'm probably just another kid added to their collectio-

What did Washington say?
"Two things.... Did you seriously just say school? And what the hell are pancakes?"

Mr Washington looked confused.
"If it's a problem I'd be happy to homeschool you."

"Oh no I just was a little shocked, the only school in Nevis was private so I've never had a proper education..."

"Well you're a very smart kid, Alex" Mrs Washington said, while placing the food on the table, "with or without a proper education. But yes we're taking you to sign up at the high school."

I looked down at the plate in front of me. I didn't want to eat. And even if I did I wasn't so sure about eating what was on my plate. It was new to me and I hate new things. I hate change. The thing on my plate was round and spongy like a cake, but who eats cake for breakfast?!

Lafayette spoke up, "Mon ami, this is a pancake!"
