My American literature class had just ended and I was tempted to stop and speak to my professor about an upcoming assignment before leaving the lecture hall, but I decided against it. I put my notebook and pen into my bag and adjusted my skirt before throwing on my jacket. As I was walking out of my lecture hall, my professor Mr. Conroy, or Nate as he liked us to call him, stopped me before I got the chance to walk out of the room.
"Jordane, don't forget about your presentation on Thursday of next week. I expect very admirable work," he said as I barely stopped to listen.
Now, normally I would be jumping at an opportunity to stay after class with Nate, obviously because he's a gift from the heavens, but I was in too big of a rush to leave. I was excited because one of my best friends had just gotten back from a trip to Greece and I hadn't seen her in almost three weeks.
I felt like the walk across campus was taking absolutely forever. That was one bad thing about being a freshman and having a designated parking zone that was on the complete other side of the campus from almost all of the literature classes.
Once I finally got to my car, I could not drive off campus fast enough. I was playing the radio, practically as loud as it could go as I got closer and closer to my destination. I turned down their street and saw only a few cars parked in the driveway, which was odd because I thought everyone would be over. I parked my car next to a Volkswagen buggy that I had seen before, but couldn't remember whose it was.
I got out of the car, throwing my bag over my shoulder as I walked up the path. I didn't bother ringing the doorbell as I walked right on into the house. There was almost no noise in the house whatsoever, which made me wonder why everyone left. I walked towards the living room where I heard the sound of the television. I saw Luke sitting on the couch watching the Divergent movie.
"I knew there was a reason we're best friends," I said to Luke as I took my coat off.
"Hey, long time no talk. Where did you disappear to?" he replied, getting up and hugging me.
"I was stuck under the huge mound of American Literature work that my devilishly handsome professor decided to give me. He claims that I'm his best student and he wants me to do extra work to help him prepare more coursework. It's bogus if you ask me."
"Devilishly handsome, huh? Sounds like paradise," he joked.
"So where is everyone? I was expecting them all to be here to celebrate Jen's return from her lovely trip."
"Well Beau and Manda are out at lunch, Kat is at her house helping her mom paint, James took Jen for a celebratory trip to the mall, Daniel is out somewhere, Bella is at school, and Jai is upstairs."
"Then I'm going to run up and say hello to Jai."
"You might not want to do that," Luke said with a serious look.
"Why not?" I asked.
Just then I saw the reason why. Jai walked out of his room with none other than Ariana walking out behind him. I began to feel myself getting angrier by the second.
Ariana and I do not have a very good past. After the first time her and Jai broke up, we got into a huge fight and things got semi physical. I may or may not have punched her in the face... oops. But ever since then, we've absolutely hated each other.
Her and Jai walked down the stairs and once she saw me, her smile turned into a look of disgust.
"Well, look who decided to show her face," I said.
"Jor just let it go," Luke said, pulling me away from Ariana.
A little over an hour later, Jai and I were laying on the floor of his bedroom, listening to music and talking about random things. I knew that at some point he would bring up Ariana, but I didn't think it would take nearly as long as it did.
"How come you hate Ariana so much?"
"Because she treated you like dirt and in the end she cheated on you and broke your heart and I just don't trust her."
That was mostly the reason, but I also hated her because I knew that she could never care for Jai like I did. It wasn't fair that she treated him like shit but she was the one who got to be with him.
