I dreamed of my parents again; although, it was a good memory this time. Suddenly, it switched to the scene where the car fell in the river. I saw every last detail of it again, like it was happening right before my eyes. Finally I tore myself out of sleep only after the bubbles of their last breath escaped. As I opened my eyes, I saw Xander standing over me.
“Max, are you okay? I came to wake you up for school to find you flailing and thrashing in bed,” he said concerned.
“I’m fine. It was just a nightmare,” I wrote on my board.
“Good I was hoping I wouldn’t have a total spaz in this house. I’m leaving in thirty minutes, so be ready by then or I’m leaving you,” he said falling back into his usual self.
I glared at him as he left and threw a pillow at him, to which he caught and threw back at me. I got out of bed and closed and locked the catch on my floor. I grabbed my uniform and a few other things and changed quickly, pulling on the long sleeve shirt and buttoning it up. I pulled on black tights underneath the skirt and put on a pair of black flats. I brushed my wavy blonde hair then fixed its waves with my hands making them a lot looser. I put a white hairband in my hair. I grabbed my messenger bag and threw in a notebook, two pencils, my sketchbook, and my dry erase board. Running downstairs and into the kitchen, I found Xander there. He tossed an apple at me.
“Good, you’re right on time. Let’s go,” he said. I followed him out of the house and down the driveway. I walked next to him as we quickly walked to school. We walked on the sidewalk with him on the side closer to the road. It took about fifteen minutes to get to school.
As we walked into the gate which started the school grounds, I felt everyone’s eyes on me. A lot of the girls and guys were staring at me. Their gazes caused a feeling of uneasiness to surface.
“Don’t worry about them. They’re all just surprised that someone new is enrolling in your school. It’ll die down after a bit,” said Xander. He must’ve been able to sense my uneasiness. Xander took me into the counselor’s’ office then left to go to class, so he wouldn’t be late. I met the nice lady behind the front desk, and she told me I had to take a standard test to see where I’d be placed.
She sent me into a back room to take it. Most of the stuff on it I already knew. There was a lot of high level math, English, science, and social studies. Once I turned in the test, I waited for it to be graded.
“Congratulations, you scored number seven in English, thirty two in Algebra, twelve in science, and twenty four in social studies. In this school the lower the number, the higher you are in your school year ranking. Right now you are ranked as number nineteen, so you are going to mostly be in b ranked classes. For English, you will be in an A ranked class. If you need any help with your studies, I’m sure you can ask your cousin. Now here’s your schedule. Class two is in session,” she said.
Leaving the office, I walked to my locker and put in the combination, throwing my back inside after taking out what I needed for my classes. I looked back at my schedule. I had algebra now, and eventually, I found my class on the second floor.
The second and third classes went by moderately easily, after going through the small introductions I had to make, meaning I wrote on my whiteboard. By then everyone found out I was a mute. Some were interested in me; others shunned me like I was a plague. Mostly, people found me just plain weird or decided to pick on me since I wouldn’t talk back. In my third class, there was this group of guys who decided to make me their number one person to annoy and pick on today. Sadly, I was already quite ready to punch one of them in their face. I could already tell I was going to hate this school.
